Position Summary
Reporting to the Plant Manager and collaborating with the Total Process Safety (TPS) Technology Team, the Safety Process Engineer will spearhead the TPS initiative. This role is pivotal in ensuring adherence to corporate and local regulatory safety standards within the operations and performance of the Windsor Oilseed Crush Plant and Refinery. The Safety Process Engineer will utilize their technical knowledge and exceptional team-building skills to engage a diverse workforce, from frontline employees to management, in promoting our TPS program. Successful collaboration with on-site peers and beyond is essential for achieving safe operational outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
As a vital member of the site management team, the Safety Process Engineer will lead and coordinate the Total Process Safety program for the facility.
- Develop, implement, and enhance the TPS program.
- Oversee process safety initiatives at the facility.
- Chair the facility's TPS Committee.
- Foster a safety-oriented culture by setting and achieving goals, continuously reducing risks, and preventing process safety incidents.
- Assess, monitor, and report on process safety performance, collaborating with leadership to devise and implement enhancements, while working with the TPS Technology Team on related programs and objectives.
- Collaborate with the Global Process Hazard Analysis Manager to lead or participate in local Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and associated action plans.
- Conduct or facilitate local TPS incident investigations; prepare and disseminate Safety Alerts and Best Practices.
- Serve as the Process Safety Reviewer for Management of Change (MOC) requests.
- Represent the facility in TPS-related Improvement and Capital Investment projects.
- Provide TPS training to various levels of plant leadership and engineering staff.
- Engage in Process Safety Management (PSM) and TPS Audits; conduct or lead self-assessments for the facility.
- Organize and maintain technical process safety documentation.
- Act as the facility's Fire Protection System (FPS) Coordinator.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Proven self-starter with the ability to work independently.
- Results-oriented with a focus on achieving leadership-established goals.
- Capable of motivating and demonstrating leadership qualities to all personnel.
- Strong continuous improvement mindset, decision-making capabilities, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and noisy settings, while adhering to safety protocols.
- Physical capability to navigate stairs, ladders, and elevated platforms, and to perform tasks requiring lifting, sitting, standing, and bending.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or Agricultural) or equivalent experience, with a preference for candidates with 2+ years of safety experience.
- Familiarity with the 14 elements of Process Safety Management (PSM).
- Beneficial experience includes oilseed extraction and processing, grain handling, and oil refining.
- Compliance with local/provincial legislation is essential.
- Accountability for full compliance with safety and EHS requirements is expected.
