Currently, the Office of Research Services, Innovation and Entrepreneurship is seeking qualified candidates for the role of VR Specialist within the Mixed-Reality Capture (MRC) Studio. This part-time, project-based contract position involves overseeing the development of practical solutions for industry partners through applied research and knowledge transfer initiatives.

Collaborative teams comprising expert faculty, students, and recent graduates work alongside industry partners to deliver innovative, real-time engine-based solutions addressing critical business challenges. Projects may encompass prototype production and testing, technology evaluation, and the development of new or enhanced products and processes for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and studios. All projects receive funding through provincial or federal government grants.

The MRC Studio, located at the Oshawa Campus, provides SMEs with access to state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, technical expertise, and project services aimed at supporting product development, technology adoption, market expansion, and the commercialization of new products, services, and processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct applied research projects in partnership with college staff and industry collaborators.
  • Develop comprehensive work plans with industry partners, outlining resource requirements, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Participate in meetings, presenting project scopes, deliverables, and performance metrics.
  • Identify human resource needs and oversee the recruitment of student research assistants.
  • Mentor and supervise student research assistants throughout project execution.
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership for applied research initiatives.
  • Prepare and implement dissemination activities, assisting research assistants in the development of final materials and reports.
  • Support college staff and students in final report preparation and metric collection.
  • Engage in follow-up activities with industry clients or funding agencies.
  • Present research findings at internal and external events, including conferences and seminars, and assist in developing case studies.
Qualifications:
  • A degree or diploma in Game Development, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of relevant industry experience, showcasing a demonstrable portfolio of professional work.
  • Proven research skills and project delivery capabilities, preferably with experience in executing research projects.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in both remote and studio environments.
  • Self-motivated and independent, yet capable of thriving in a collaborative team setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, support staff, and external partners.
  • Unwavering commitment to confidentiality.
Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in Unreal Engine and/or Unity, with knowledge of Blueprints and binary optimization/deployment across multiple platforms, including Windows and Android. iOS packaging experience is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating VR applications for both Windows and Android platforms.
  • Familiarity with project management tracking tools.
  • Experience integrating external hardware through plug-ins or Live Link is a significant advantage.
  • Familiarity with git-based version control systems is beneficial.
  • C++ programming experience within the Unreal Engine environment is a plus but not mandatory.

Required Experience

Up to 24 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be necessary. Some travel to industry partner locations may be required.
