Durham College is on the lookout for skilled and driven professionals who are passionate about quality education and student achievement. The Office of Research Services, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship is currently inviting applications from qualified candidates interested in contributing to the AI Hub on a part-time, project-based contract. This role involves overseeing the creation of practical solutions for industry partners through applied research and knowledge transfer initiatives.

Collaborative teams of expert faculty, students, and recent graduates work alongside industry partners to deliver innovative AI-driven solutions to critical business challenges. Projects may encompass the development and testing of prototypes, assessment of new technologies, and the enhancement of products or processes for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). All projects receive funding through provincial or federal government grants.

The AI Hub, situated at the Oshawa Campus, offers SMEs access to essential facilities, equipment, technical expertise, and project services to support product development, technology integration, market expansion, and the commercialization of new products, services, and processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct applied research projects in partnership with college staff and industry collaborators.
  • Develop comprehensive work plans with industry partners, detailing resource requirements, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Participate in meetings to present project scopes, deliverables, and performance metrics.
  • Identify staffing needs and conduct interviews for student research assistants.
  • Supervise and mentor student research assistants.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership for applied research initiatives.
  • Prepare and execute dissemination activities, including assisting research assistants in the creation of final reports and materials.
  • Support college staff and students in the development and completion of final reports and metric collection.
  • Engage in follow-up activities with industry clients or funding agencies.
  • Present research findings at internal and external events, including conferences and seminars, and assist in the development of case studies.
  • Occasional travel to industry partner locations may be required.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Computing Science, Information Technology, Business, or a related discipline; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Three to five years of relevant industry experience with a proven track record in applicable fields and technologies.
  • Demonstrated research capabilities and project management experience, ideally with prior involvement in research projects.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with keen attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a dynamic office environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) within a Windows setting.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently while also thriving in a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, support staff, and external partners.

Technical Skills
  • Proven experience in delivering commercial projects utilizing Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, and related technologies.
  • Experience with Generative AI, Large Language Models, and data mining techniques.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing clusters and cloud environments such as Azure and AWS.
  • Understanding of database structures and functionalities.
  • Experience with deep learning applications in various domains, including speech, vision, audio, and NLP.
  • Proficient in project management tools.
  • Hands-on experience with open-source deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch, along with a solid grasp of algorithmic concepts.
  • Programming skills in languages such as C/C++, Python, Scala, and Java; GoLang is a plus.
  • Strong background in large-scale data analysis systems, including Spark and Hadoop.

Work hours are up to 24 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend and evening commitments as necessary.
