The Office of Research Services, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship invites applications for the role of VR Specialist within the Mixed-Reality Capture (MRC) Studio. This part-time, project-based contract position involves overseeing the creation of real-world solutions for industry partners through applied research initiatives.

Our teams, comprising expert faculty, students, and recent graduates, collaborate with industry partners to deliver innovative, real-time engine-based solutions addressing critical business challenges. Projects may involve prototype development, technology evaluation, and the enhancement of products or processes for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). All projects receive funding through provincial or federal government grants.

The MRC Studio, located at the Oshawa Campus, offers SMEs access to state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, technical expertise, and project services to support product development, technology integration, market expansion, and the commercialization of new offerings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct applied research projects in partnership with college staff and industry stakeholders.
  • Develop collaborative work plans with industry partners, outlining resource needs, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Participate in meetings to present project scopes, deliverables, and performance metrics.
  • Identify human resource requirements and assist in the recruitment of student research assistants.
  • Mentor and supervise student research assistants throughout project execution.
  • Provide technical leadership and expertise for applied research initiatives.
  • Prepare and implement dissemination strategies, including assisting research assistants in final report preparation.
  • Support college staff and students in compiling final reports and gathering performance metrics.
  • Engage in follow-up activities with industry clients or funding agencies.
  • Present research findings at internal and external events, including conferences and seminars, as necessary.
Qualifications:
  • A degree or diploma in Game Development, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Three to five years of relevant industry experience with a demonstrable portfolio of work.
  • Proven research skills and project management capabilities, preferably with experience in executing research projects.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in both remote and studio environments.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently while thriving in a collaborative team setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, support staff, and external partners.
  • Unwavering commitment to confidentiality.
Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in Unreal Engine and/or Unity, with knowledge of Blueprints and binary optimization for multiple platforms, including Windows and Android. Experience with iOS packaging is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating VR applications for both Windows and Android platforms.
  • Familiarity with project management tools.
  • Experience integrating external hardware through plug-ins or Live Link is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of git-based version control systems is beneficial.
  • C++ programming experience in the Unreal Engine environment is an asset but not mandatory.

Required Experience

Up to 24 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be necessary. Some travel to industry partner locations may be required.
