Durham College is currently seeking qualified professionals who share our dedication to quality and student achievement. The Office of Research Services, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship is looking for applications from skilled individuals interested in joining the Mixed-Reality Capture (MRC) Studio team as a VR Specialist, on a part-time, project-based contract. This role involves overseeing the creation of practical solutions for industry partners through applied research and knowledge transfer initiatives.
Expert faculty, students, and recent graduates collaborate with industry partners to deliver innovative, real-time engine-based solutions addressing critical business challenges. Projects may involve prototype development, technology evaluation, and the enhancement of products or processes for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and studios. All projects receive funding through provincial or federal government grants.
The MRC Studio, located at the Oshawa Campus, provides SMEs with access to facilities, equipment, technical expertise, and project services to support product development, technology adoption, market expansion, and the commercialization of new products, services, and processes.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct applied research projects in partnership with college staff and industry collaborators.
- Develop work plans in conjunction with industry partners, detailing resource requirements, milestones, and deliverables.
- Participate in meetings and present project scopes, deliverables, and performance metrics.
- Identify human resource needs and conduct interviews for student research assistants.
- Supervise and mentor student research assistants.
- Provide technical expertise and leadership for applied research initiatives.
- Prepare and implement dissemination activities, assisting research assistants in final report preparation.
- Support college staff and students in completing final reports and gathering metrics.
- Engage in follow-up activities with industry clients or funding agencies.
- Present findings at internal and external events, including conferences and seminars, as necessary, and assist in developing case studies.
- An undergraduate degree or diploma in Game Development, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- Three to five years of relevant industry experience, demonstrating proficiency in fields and technologies pertinent to project opportunities, supported by a professional portfolio.
- Proven research capabilities and project delivery experience, preferably in conducting research projects.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work and communicate efficiently in both remote and studio environments.
- Self-motivated and independent, yet able to thrive in a collaborative team setting.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, support staff, and external partners.
- Unwavering commitment to confidentiality.
- Technical and creative expertise in Unreal Engine and/or Unity, including Blueprints and binary optimization/deployment across multiple platforms, such as Windows and Android. Experience with iOS packaging is advantageous.
- Proven track record in developing VR applications in Unreal Engine for both Windows and Android platforms.
- Familiarity with project management tracking tools.
- Experience integrating external hardware through plug-ins or Live Link is a significant asset.
- Knowledge of git-based version control systems is beneficial.
- C++ programming experience within the Unreal Engine environment is a plus but not mandatory.

Required Experience
Up to 24 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be necessary. Some travel to industry partner locations may be required.
