Toronto, Ontario, Canada Humber College Full time

Key Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the Associate Director, Energy & Climate Change within the Capital Development & Facilities Management division, the Senior Project Manager, Mechanical and Electrical, plays a crucial role in the successful execution of intricate, often multi-million dollar and multi-year mechanical and electrical infrastructure initiatives while ensuring minimal disruption to institutional operations.

A diverse array of projects is anticipated, including but not limited to:

  • Transitioning heating distribution systems from steam to hot water.
  • Decommissioning existing campus steam heating facilities and networks, constructing new hot water piping systems, and installing updated central plant equipment.
  • Modifying CV Systems to VAV configurations.
  • Retrofitting and replacing Air Handling Units (AHUs) and Energy Recovery Ventilators.
  • Overseeing engineering feasibility assessments for long-term strategic planning of heating and cooling assets.
  • Upgrading aging Central Plant equipment (boilers, chillers) with more efficient systems (e.g., heat pumps, heat recovery chillers).
  • Expanding heating and cooling networks to connect buildings currently not served by central utility plants.
  • Installing new building-level hot water to hot water heat exchangers.
  • Enhancing the operation of existing heating, cooling, and ventilation systems while minimizing supply and return temperatures to support low carbon heating sources.
  • Implementing building-level modifications, which may include: building-side piping adjustments, upgrading AHU coils, local humidification, and domestic hot water (DHW) connections.
  • Integrating low carbon energy sources to support heating and cooling systems.
  • Executing demand reduction strategies to optimize lower Global Adjustment costs.

These initiatives will contribute to Humber's Integrated Energy Master Plan (IEMP) and Climate Action Plan, both of which are comprehensive, long-term strategies aimed at positioning Humber as a leader in global energy efficiency and climate action.

The incumbent will oversee all facets of project delivery, from Request for Proposal (RFP) formulation, design, tendering, construction, commissioning, deficiency resolution, warranty evaluations, to post-construction operational optimization.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • A 4-year degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • A P. Eng. designation, licensed to practice in the Province of Ontario, or an equivalent qualification is essential.
  • A Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is considered an asset.

Experience and Skills:

The ideal candidate will possess 5-9 years of experience in the following areas:

  • Project management and construction expertise;
  • Proven track record in delivering large-scale construction projects within traditional, construction management, and/or design-build environments;
  • Experience in a variety of mechanical building services projects, including air-based and hydronic systems, boilers, chillers, rooftop units, HVAC, controls, and piping;
  • Familiarity with geo-exchange, heat pumps, biomass, and other alternative energy technologies;
  • Background in designing or constructing central utility plants and/or central plant equipment;
  • Experience in district cooling or heating network design or construction;
  • Commissioning experience;
  • Knowledge of financial, contractual, and administrative procedures;
  • Understanding of safety guidelines and project-specific safety requirements;
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities;
  • Well-organized, self-directed work habits with a demonstrated capacity to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic environment;
  • Ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders independently and professionally.

Benefits:

  • Opportunity to make a significant impact within a forward-thinking post-secondary institution.
  • A diverse, dedicated, and supportive team environment.
  • Access to tools and technology that facilitate success in your role.
  • Attractive perks and benefits.
  • A highly supportive workplace culture.
