Veterinary Regional Specialist

Become a vital member of our team as a Veterinary Regional Specialist within the Animal Welfare Services. In this influential role, you will leverage your veterinary knowledge to develop and implement cutting-edge animal care programs and risk evaluations, ensuring optimal standards of animal welfare across various settings. Your responsibilities will include offering essential veterinary guidance, executing specialized assessments, and creating educational programs for ministry personnel, while promoting collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver expert veterinary and scientific counsel for inspections and significant cases.
- Provide technical support to ensure adherence to legislative and regulatory standards.
- Contribute scientific insights to the formulation of policies and veterinary programs.
- Evaluate animal distress levels and behavioral issues, administering medical care as needed.
- Collect samples and conduct post-mortem examinations.
- Offer shelter medicine for animals under the care of Animal Welfare Services.
- Prepare expert reports and provide testimony at the Animal Care and Review Board and other legal proceedings.
- Collaborate with Animal Welfare Services staff and stakeholders to design and implement compliance programs.
- Engage with zoos, aquariums, and governmental entities to assess needs, identify risks, and develop animal health and welfare initiatives.
- Facilitate training sessions for animal welfare personnel, veterinarians, and stakeholders.
Work Environment:
- This role can be psychologically demanding, requiring management of individuals with challenging behaviors or mental health issues.
- The position necessitates physical interaction with a diverse range of animals, which can be physically taxing.
- Exposure to various chemicals, biological agents, and environmental hazards is part of the job, including strong odors and inclement weather conditions.
Qualifications:
Mandatory:
- A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine license valid in Ontario is required.
- Ability to travel throughout Ontario, including areas lacking public transit access.
Veterinary Expertise:
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in animal health and welfare, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of animal distress.
- Experience advising animal owners on care standards, including feeding and hygiene.
- Familiarity with a wide variety of animal species, including companion, exotic, and farm animals.
- Ability to interpret and apply relevant laws, regulations, and policies related to animal welfare.
Communication and Consultation Skills:
- Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills to convey technical information effectively.
- Proficient in conflict resolution and mediation.
- Excellent writing skills for preparing reports and documentation.
- High political awareness and discretion in sensitive situations.
- Ability to foster collaborative relationships with various stakeholders.
Analytical and Judgment Skills:
- Capable of making informed decisions regarding animal care and welfare.
- Adept at evaluating animal welfare programs and providing constructive feedback.
- Ability to determine when euthanasia is appropriate.
Other Essential Skills:
- Experience in delivering training and educational programs.
- Strong organizational and time management skills for effective service delivery.
- Proficiency in standard office software, including word processing and spreadsheet applications.
