Position Overview

The Infection Control Specialist plays a crucial role within the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Hub, offering expert guidance and support to various congregate living environments, including long-term care facilities and retirement homes. This position focuses on identifying, preventing, and managing infections to enhance IPAC-related initiatives across these sectors. Working closely with the IPAC Hub, infectious disease specialists, and both internal and external partners, the Infection Control Specialist ensures the effective functioning of the Algoma IPAC Hub. Reporting directly to the Manager of Infectious Diseases, the specialist will adhere to the relevant standards and regulations outlined in the Ontario Public Health Standards and IPAC Hub responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Collaborate in setting objectives, operational strategies, and deliverables aimed at improving the coordination and accessibility of infection prevention and control resources throughout the Algoma region. Offer insights and advice on the significance and role of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) to organizations, committees, and communities of practice. Provide consultative feedback and guidance on IPAC matters. Apply fundamental epidemiological principles to identify factors contributing to IPAC risks. Communicate essential resources and support to ensure adherence to appropriate IPAC practices. Foster strong relationships with community partners to promote consistent and effective infection prevention and control practices. Design and deliver educational programs on infection prevention and control for community partners and settings, aligning with quality and safety commitments. Review and analyze current scientific literature, regulations, and guidelines to inform IPAC practices among partners. Assist in the development, communication, and implementation of IPAC policies, procedures, and best practice guidelines. Conduct regular audits and assessments of facilities to ensure compliance with IPAC best practices. Engage in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in infection prevention and control. Perform additional duties as needed to support risk mitigation strategies.

Qualifications and Skills:

Master's degree in public health, health policy, epidemiology, microbiology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. Essential experience in Infection Prevention and Control. Certification in Infection Control through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology is required or must be obtained promptly. A demonstrated commitment to ongoing education in Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC). Knowledge and experience in infectious diseases, microbiology, epidemiology, and risk assessment. Strong understanding of disease processes and transmission. Ability to interpret and reference current guidelines and legislation. Proven leadership and mentoring experience within a healthcare team. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain positive relationships in high-pressure environments. Strong teaching abilities and effective written communication skills. Self-motivated and capable of working independently. Familiarity with relevant software is an asset. Effective time management and project management skills. Reliable with an excellent attendance record. Flexibility to work outside regular hours as needed. Proficiency in English is essential; knowledge of both official languages is an asset. A valid Ontario Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle are required. Compliance with COVID-19 vaccination policies is mandatory. A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) is required as a condition of employment.
