Job Overview

The Foster Program Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily functions of the foster initiative at the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS). This role includes managing schedules, training, and supervising the foster team, as well as providing support and recognition to foster volunteers to ensure the effective and safe operation of the program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of the foster program
  • Provide guidance and case consultation to staff and management regarding foster animals
  • Administer prescribed treatments and conduct medical assessments as needed
  • Assist veterinarians during rounds when required
  • Ensure all animal files are tracked and closed appropriately
  • Research and implement strategies to enhance foster operations
  • Offer consultation services to staff, management, community partners, and the public regarding foster operations
  • Develop and deliver training workshops and materials for volunteers
  • Support initiatives for volunteer recognition and retention
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of animal health, welfare issues, and community needs
  • Assist in preparing the foster program budget and projections
  • Conduct daily updates and biweekly payroll submissions for departmental staff
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of foster department staff and volunteers
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of foster staff
  • Provide orientation and ongoing training for staff and volunteers
  • Monitor performance and offer constructive feedback to team members
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations in collaboration with management
  • Ensure data accuracy in departmental records and systems
  • Manage inventory and order supplies in accordance with budget constraints
  • Foster relationships with OHS partners, clients, and stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and OHS policies
  • Generate and maintain accurate reports and documentation
  • Contribute to the development and revision of standard operating procedures
  • Participate in training, evaluation, and other necessary meetings
  • Engage in the assessment of OHS program goals, including volunteer stewardship
  • Take part in professional development opportunities
  • Engage in public relations and promotional activities as needed
  • May assume additional responsibilities as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of secondary education or equivalent
  • At least two years of experience in customer service
  • A minimum of two years in a supervisory capacity
  • Veterinary Technician diploma or significant experience in animal health is preferred
  • Experience in managing volunteers is advantageous
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong command of spoken and written English is essential

Working Conditions

  • Availability for evening, holiday, and weekend shifts is required
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certification
  • Ability to provide services safely, including handling large animals and interacting with potentially aggressive animals
  • Uniform compliance as designated by the employer
  • Confidentiality of OHS information must be maintained
  • Ability to work safely around various species of animals is essential

Schedule:

Week 1: Tuesday - Friday: 9am - 5pm; Saturday: 8am - 4pm

Week 2: Monday - Wednesday: 9am - 5pm; Thursday: 11:30am - 7:30pm; Friday: 9am - 5pm

75 hours bi-weekly
