Position Overview:

The role of a Millwright Apprentice involves working with industrial equipment to ensure proper installation, repair, and maintenance. This position requires visiting client locations while maintaining the company's professional image. As a Millwright Apprentice/General Labourer, you will play a vital role in supporting the team, acquiring skills, and preparing for the C of Q Millwright examination. It is essential for our Millwright Apprentices to embody a positive company image through safety, quality, consistency, and professionalism.

Key Duties:

  • Comprehend and adhere to the Employee Manual
  • Observe all safety protocols
  • Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (Hard hats, steel-toed boots, safety glasses, harnesses, etc.)
  • Employ safe practices when operating any machinery in the workshop or on-site
  • Only operate equipment for which you have received training
  • Accurately complete time sheets and seek assistance from the foreman when necessary
  • Be available for weekend and overtime work as needed
  • Willingness to travel for work assignments
  • Consistently conduct oneself in a professional manner aligned with Company values, including language, attire, and workmanship
  • Overtime and work outside regular hours may be required as per company policy and relevant employment legislation
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Vehicle Maintenance for Road Crew

The road crew vehicle serves as the millwright's access point for tools and equipment, as well as transportation to job sites. It is imperative that the vehicle remains organized and clean. The following tasks are expected from the Millwright Apprentice:

  • Maintain inventory in vehicles (welding rods, grinding/cutting disks, nuts/bolts, silicone, compressed gases, etc.)
  • Ensure vehicles are kept tidy and free of debris
  • Organize tools and equipment securely on shelving
  • Properly hang cables, ropes, and cords
  • Secure welding equipment and compressed gas tanks

Pre-Departure Duties

Each morning, prior to leaving for the job site, the Millwright Apprentice will assist with the following tasks:

  • Check inventory in the road crew vehicle
  • Load any necessary small parts for the job site into the vehicle
  • Assist foremen and lead hands in loading the trailer, if required

Responsibilities at Job Site

While on-site, the Millwright Apprentice has several critical responsibilities:

  • Execute tasks assigned by the foreman
  • Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the job site
  • Follow instructions and perform assigned tasks
  • Engage in cutting, grinding, and welding duties as needed
  • Assist foreman and lead hands with rigging equipment
  • Participate in the assembly of machinery

Learning and Development

Acquiring new skills is vital for a fulfilling career in millwrighting. The Millwright Apprentice is expected to focus on learning and enhancing skills in the following areas:

  • Utilization of measuring tools
  • Safe operation of power tools
  • Cutting and operation of torches, plasma cutters, zip discs, etc.
  • Welding (SMAW, GTAW) in preparation for CWB testing (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead)
  • Equipment layout
  • Proper assembly and installation of components (bearings, motors, gearboxes, pulleys, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or aspiring to obtain a Millwright License
  • Previous millwright experience or education is considered a strong asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Adhere to all safety regulations
  • Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (Hard hats, steel-toed boots, safety glasses, harnesses, etc.)
  • Employ safe procedures when operating any machinery in the workshop or on-site
  • Only operate equipment for which you are licensed
  • Accurately complete time sheets and seek assistance from the foreman when necessary
  • Exhibit a proactive attitude and skill in overcoming obstacles
  • Work collaboratively within a team, prioritizing collective success
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify errors and potential issues beyond immediate customer needs
  • Adapt quickly to changing priorities and conditions, effectively managing complexity and change
  • Communicate clearly and directly in both oral and written forms
