Key Responsibilities

  • Execute daily operational tasks in both laboratory and radiology departments as necessary.
  • Laboratory Duties:

  • Engage in hematology, coagulation, and chemistry analyses.
  • Conduct daily quality assurance checks as required.
  • Process patient samples and generate reports.
  • Manage the receipt of blood components and products.
  • Allocate and distribute uncross-matched red blood cells, albumin, RHIG, IVIG, plasma, and cross-matched red cells.
  • Oversee the transportation of blood components and products.
  • Quarantine and dispose of blood products appropriately.
  • Pool and reconstitute purified plasma products (such as PCC, fibrinogen).
Radiology Duties:

  • Carry out general x-ray procedures within the department and on patient floors.
  • Prepare imaging for physicians and radiologists by retrieving pertinent previous films and completing all necessary documentation.
  • Maintain the film library efficiently.
Conduct phlebotomy for both inpatients and outpatients. Document and monitor both internal and external quality control processes. Perform clerical tasks such as inventory management, maintaining daily statistics, managing files, and coordinating referrals of x-ray films and specimens. Engage in both internal and external quality assurance initiatives. Carry out equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, ensuring proper documentation of work performed. Assist in the training and orientation of new staff, including conducting in-service training as needed. Provide on-call services as required. Adhere to health and safety protocols, promptly reporting any unsafe conditions to supervisors. Undertake additional related responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology Program.
  • Eligibility for registration with a provincial licensing authority.
  • Completion of the NAIT TRAM 101 Course, with a minimum of one year of recent, relevant experience or equivalent education and training in transfusion medicine.

Skills and Competencies

  • Proven recent knowledge of the assigned laboratory sections.
  • Familiarity with laboratory procedures and technical skills necessary for conducting tests, including quality control and safety protocols.
  • Basic understanding of the research process.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with effective verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Capacity to organize and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with others.
  • Competence to perform under pressure in a dynamic environment.
  • Basic knowledge of other healthcare disciplines and their roles in patient care using point-of-care instrumentation.
  • Proficiency in operating relevant equipment and software.
  • Physical capability to fulfill the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to fostering reconciliation in Canada, aligned with TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • As a strong asset, familiarity with the social, economic, political, and historical contexts affecting Indigenous Peoples, and knowledge of Indigenous-specific anti-racism initiatives.
