POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Harm Reduction Support Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering direct support to individuals living with HIV and/or Hepatitis C. Under the guidance of management, this position employs a harm reduction approach to assist a diverse range of service users both in the office and within the community.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Engage actively with individuals affected by HIV/Hepatitis C, utilizing a collaborative and person-centered approach grounded in harm reduction principles.
  2. Conduct brief assessments and provide crisis intervention and counseling to address immediate needs, including housing, income, and identification support, while making referrals to additional health and support services.
  3. Advocate for clients with various agencies to ensure they receive comprehensive information and assistance.
  4. Assist clients in navigating issues related to housing, healthcare, legal matters, and other support services.
  5. Facilitate bi-monthly group sessions for priority populations.
  6. Accompany clients to appointments within the community.
  7. Distribute harm reduction supplies and offer education on safer substance use and sexual practices.
  8. Conduct educational sessions and develop materials tailored to client needs.
  9. Provide testing information and referrals during outreach activities.
  10. Coordinate targeted testing initiatives for specific populations.
  11. Offer onsite supervision and support to service users.
  12. Collaborate with partner organizations to ensure a comprehensive range of services.
  13. Support individuals who have experienced overdoses, including access to Opiate Agonist Treatment (OAT) and other resources.
  14. Participate in community initiatives focused on HIV/Hepatitis C.
  15. Engage in program planning, evaluation, and development as directed.
  16. Maintain confidential client records in both paper and electronic formats.
  17. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma in health or social services or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in harm reduction practices.
  • Experience in direct service delivery and advocacy within community support systems.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
  • Ability to engage respectfully with Indigenous communities through a trauma-informed lens.
  • Proven ability to build rapport and advocate for diverse clients, including those facing significant health challenges.
  • Strong skills in public speaking and group facilitation.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Competence in conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
  • Understanding of the psychosocial issues affecting individuals living with HIV and/or Hepatitis C.
