At AVI, we prioritize building meaningful relationships among clients, staff, and the broader community. Our Positive Wellness Program offers integrated support for individuals living with HIV and/or hepatitis C, including assistance with income support, healthcare access, housing, and legal matters. We emphasize a harm reduction approach, recognizing that clients are the best experts on their needs.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Positive Wellness Program Support Specialist is tasked with delivering direct services to individuals living with HIV and/or hepatitis C. Under managerial guidance, the specialist will employ a harm reduction framework to assist a diverse clientele both in-office and within the community.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Engage proactively with individuals affected by HIV/Hepatitis C, utilizing a collaborative and client-centered approach.
- Conduct brief assessments and provide crisis intervention and counseling to address immediate needs, including housing and income support.
- Advocate for clients with various governmental agencies to ensure they receive necessary information and assistance.
- Collaborate with clients on issues related to housing, healthcare, and legal support.
- Facilitate bi-monthly group sessions for priority populations.
- Accompany clients to community appointments as needed.
- Distribute harm reduction supplies while educating clients on safer substance use and sexual practices.
- Organize and conduct educational sessions tailored to client needs.
- Provide testing information and referrals during outreach activities.
- Coordinate targeted testing initiatives for specific populations.
- Offer on-site supervision and support to service users.
- Collaborate with partner organizations to ensure a comprehensive range of services.
- Support individuals who have experienced overdose, including access to Opiate Agonist Treatment (OAT).
- Participate in community initiatives focused on HIV/Hepatitis C.
- Engage in program planning, evaluation, and development as directed.
- Maintain confidential client records in both paper and electronic formats.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma in health or social services (e.g., Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health & Addictions Support) or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of two years of relevant work experience.
- Knowledge and experience in harm reduction principles and practices.
- Experience in direct service delivery and advocacy within community-based support systems.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and access to a vehicle.
- Ability to engage respectfully with Indigenous communities, applying a trauma-informed and decolonial perspective.
- Proven ability to build rapport and advocate for a diverse clientele, including those facing significant health challenges.
- Strong public speaking and group facilitation skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.

POSITION DETAILS:
- Pay: Competitive hourly rate with incremental increases based on tenure.
- Hours: Part-time position with a set weekly schedule.
