About the Role

AVI Health and Community Services is a multi-disciplinary community-based organization providing comprehensive services to individuals living with HIV and hepatitis C. We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Positive Wellness Program Support Worker to join our team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver direct services to individuals living with HIV and/or hepatitis C, utilizing a harm reduction model and collaborative approach.
  • Conduct brief assessments, provide crisis response, and offer counseling to meet immediate needs and make referrals to other health and support services.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with various government agencies and organizations to ensure access to information and support.
  • Work with clients on issues such as housing, medical, legal, and other support agencies.
  • Facilitate bi-monthly group sessions for priority populations.
  • Attend appointments with clients in the community.
  • Distribute harm reduction supplies and provide education and support on safer substance use and safer sex practices.
  • Develop and deliver individual or group education sessions, and compile educational materials to meet client needs.
  • Provide testing information, education, and referrals to clients both on-site and during outreach activities.
  • Coordinate targeted testing events for priority populations.
  • Provide on-site supervision and support to clients.
  • Collaborate with partner agencies to provide a continuum of services, including Positive Wellness Service providers.
  • Support individuals who have survived overdose(s), including Opiate Agonist Treatment (OAT) and other resources.
  • Participate in regional STOP HIV Collaborative and other HIV/Hepatitis C community initiatives.
  • Contribute to planning, evaluation, and program development as directed.
  • Maintain confidential client files.
Requirements
  • Diploma in health or social services, or equivalent combination of education and work/lived experience.
  • Minimum of two years' relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated skills, experience, and knowledge in harm reduction principles and practices.
  • Direct service delivery and advocacy experience with community-based and provincial support services and systems.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and access to a vehicle to transport clients.
  • Able to respectfully engage and support Indigenous relationships, with a trauma-informed and decolonial lens.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport, provide support, and advocate for a diverse range of clientele.
  • Demonstrated empathic observer invested in respectful relationship-building.
  • Demonstrated skills, experience, and knowledge in harm reduction/health promotion practices, safer using practices, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, poverty issues, mental health concerns, and substance use.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social justice, health promotion, and public health approaches and models of social support and health care.
  • Understanding of the impact on individual health and well-being, as well as considerations for service delivery related to systemic barriers associated with poverty, mental health, substance use, trauma, racism, ongoing colonialism, heterosexism, and gender discrimination.
  • Experience managing hostile interactions, utilizing non-violent communication, and using trauma-informed practice.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and developing workshops.
  • Strong public speaking and group facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated time management and personal organization skills to effectively support a high volume of client work.
Working with AVI
  • AVI is a union environment under the Collective Agreement: HEABC & Health Services & Support Community Subsector Association.
  • This role is a BCGEU union position.
  • Eligible for extended health, life, and AD&D coverage after 488 hours with AVI.
  • AVI contributes an additional 9.31% towards your pension account.
  • Part-time staff may become eligible for the Municipal Pension Plan after 2 years with AVI.
  • 6% vacation (equivalent to 3 weeks), receives Stat In Lieu payments of 4.6% on each paycheque, and has a Sick Bank of 6.9%.
