The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is dedicated to enhancing the delivery of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across the region. Position Overview

Under the general oversight of the Charge Technologist or designated personnel, the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) plays a crucial role in aiding the laboratory's functions, including sample triaging, accessioning, and processing of specimens. The MLA may also conduct basic routine procedures in accordance with established protocols. Responsibilities include performing phlebotomies as per departmental policies. The MLA is expected to uphold a safe working environment in line with professional and provincial standards, ensuring adherence to quality assurance programs and maintaining the standards set forth by Accreditation. All tasks are carried out in alignment with the Mission and Values of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, current policies, and applicable legislation.

Experience

Previous relevant experience is preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, in accordance with Manitoba Standards, is required.
  • Graduation from a Medical Laboratory Assistant program is preferred.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is preferred.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.
  • Knowledge of sterile techniques and routine practices is preferred.
  • Typing skills of 50 – 55 wpm are an asset.
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Capacity to follow oral and written instructions accurately with attention to detail.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English are required.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Capability to perform under pressure.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality regarding all information related to the position.
  • Fluency in both French and English may be required.
  • Ability to fulfill the duties as outlined.
