About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Healthy Communities, the Youth Health Centre Coordinator (YHCC) is a vital member of the Public Health Team within Nova Scotia Health Authority. The YHCC operates within established Public Health Standards and Protocols, adhering to a Health Promoting Schools Approach guided by the Public Health, Health Promoting Schools Standards.

The YHCC provides leadership, informal assessment, service navigation, youth engagement, and support for youth associated with the assigned school facility and its surrounding community. The YHCC champions youth health, health equity, and facilitates youth engagement as a core component of health-promoting schools.

Collaborating with youth, the YHCC fosters cooperation and collaboration among school administrators, teachers, SchoolsPlus staff, guidance counselors, student/youth support workers, primary healthcare providers, mental health and addictions specialists, and other community partners. This ensures that youth have access to comprehensive support, programs, and services within the school and community that promote well-being.

The YHCC models and provides safe, equitable, and inclusive youth support while understanding the diverse experiences of the school and the surrounding community.

About You

  • You possess a Baccalaureate degree in a relevant healthcare discipline (registered nurse, occupational therapist, social worker, nutritionist).
  • You have a minimum of three years of experience in a relevant field; direct work with youth is highly preferred.
  • You are registered/licensed with your regulated healthcare discipline, college, or association (registered nurse, occupational therapist, social worker, nutritionist).
  • Fluency in both French and English, both written and oral, is essential.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are required.
  • You excel at working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team within the organization and the community.
  • You demonstrate the ability to critically assess situations and navigate complex scenarios using sound decision-making and a non-judgmental, trauma-informed approach in supporting youth.
  • You have proven experience in creating opportunities for meaningful youth engagement and fostering youth leadership.
  • You possess a demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health, health equity, and their impact on health outcomes for youth, families, and communities.
  • Experience in applying public health principles and practices, partnership development, and community development is an asset.
  • Experience relevant to children and youth, health promotion strategies in school and community settings is highly valued.
