Job Overview:

The Design Systems Engineer plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the Chief Engineering team and the Product Release Center. This position is chiefly accountable for overseeing the interactions and interfaces among the various components and subsystems of the EDM gearbox.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the hardware system of the EDM Gearbox, ensuring the integration and balance of all components.
  • Collaborate with individual Design Release Engineers and Centers of Excellence (COEs).
  • Engage with manufacturing processes and suppliers.
  • Coordinate with the Development Validation Center.
  • Schedule and conduct hardware system design reviews across the Product Release Center, assessing Design Release Engineer proposals as necessary.
  • Facilitate reviews with the Virtual Analysis and CAE teams, ensuring completion of the Virtual Design Validation Plan and Scorecard prior to any prototype hardware orders.
  • Manage the Driveline System and lead DFMEA/DRBFM reviews to promote transparency and develop cohesive Design Controls that lead to robust DVP actions.
  • Assist Chief Engineering and ACE in formulating FTE and ER&D/ED&D cost roll-ups for minor, MCA, and new programs.
  • Review and authorize all change notices, ensuring that checklists, lessons learned, and engineering best practices are updated and aligned.
  • Lead Technical Cost Reduction and Value Optimization initiatives, working closely with the Product Release Center, Development Validation Center, and Value Optimization teams.
  • Represent Chief Engineering in managing the 'lessons learned' documentation for the program, ensuring timely updates for Technical Specialists to revise engineering best practices.
  • Periodically review the validation completion status of the driveline system and relevant components with the Development Validation Center team, providing updates to Chief Engineering.
  • Coordinate the Design Review Board Technical Review and manage follow-up items, making decisions on issuing GIMS for problem areas.
  • Lead cross-functional task force teams for Continuous Quality Improvement and GIMS, collaborating with ACE to establish priorities, action plans, and track progress while aligning and updating the initiatives list.

Qualifications:

  • 0-3 years of engineering experience.
  • Fundamental understanding of EDM Gearboxes, Drivelines, Axles, or Transmission Systems and their interface requirements.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to issue resolution.
  • Capability to perform under pressure and within time constraints.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Self-driven and motivated.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of engineering experience in driveline, axles, transmission, electrified driveline systems, or powertrain systems engineering.
  • Experience with Design Release Responsibility for Gearbox, Driveline, or Axle systems.
  • Master's degree in Engineering - Mechanical, Electrical, or a related field.
  • Experience in supervising or leading small teams.
  • General knowledge and experience in powertrain duty cycle analysis.
  • Aptitude for managing a high volume of parts and system complexity.
  • Familiarity with powertrain product development processes.
  • Knowledge of Functional Block Diagrams, Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA), and Design Validation Plan and Report (DVP&R).
  • Green or black belt in Shainin or DFSS is desirable.
  • Experience with electric motors in automotive applications.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects to successful completion.
  • System-level thinking, understanding the interdependencies of various powertrain components and systems.
  • Outstanding presentation skills.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering - Mechanical, Electrical, or a related field.
