Position Overview

The Ontario Cannabis Store is seeking a Chief Legal Officer to lead our legal department. This pivotal role involves reporting directly to the President & Chief Executive Officer and being an integral part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The Chief Legal Officer will manage all legal affairs of the organization and provide strategic legal guidance to the Board of Directors, the CEO, and various departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive legal advice that supports strategic business initiatives and operational decisions.
  • Oversee the Legal Services department, ensuring effective management of both in-house legal staff and external legal counsel.
  • Develop and implement corporate compliance strategies, including privacy policies, records management, and corporate governance.
  • Collaborate with senior management to align legal strategies with the organization's business objectives.
  • Foster a culture of compliance within the organization, ensuring adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain strong relationships with legal counterparts in other governmental and regulatory bodies.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance the organization's legal capabilities and responsiveness to the evolving cannabis industry landscape.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal degree.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior legal role, preferably within a regulated industry.
  • Proven leadership abilities with a focus on team development and performance management.
  • Strong understanding of corporate law, compliance, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a knack for drafting precise legal documents.
  • Ability to navigate complex legal environments and provide sound legal advice to non-legal stakeholders.
