Northwest Employment Works is currently seeking to fill the position of

CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER

The Chief Legal Officer will be responsible for leading the legal services department and ensuring the effective delivery of legal assistance to the communities served. This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of legal frameworks and a commitment to upholding the organization's mission and values.

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Manage the daily functions of the legal services department and ensure high-quality legal support is provided.

• Supervise legal staff to guarantee adherence to relevant policies and regulations.

• Collaborate with various programs and stakeholders to enhance service delivery.

• Ensure compliance with legal standards and participate in necessary training sessions.

• Work closely with the executive team to develop and manage the annual budget for legal services.

• Represent the organization in partnerships with community members, government entities, and funding organizations to promote the mission and values.

• Provide oversight and guidance to legal programs and initiatives.

• Attend and contribute to all relevant committees and meetings.

Qualifications

• Must be a licensed attorney in Ontario with 5 to 10 years of experience in various areas of law, including criminal, family, and administrative law, with a strong focus on Indigenous legal issues.

• Comprehensive knowledge of legal systems, governance, public policy, and cultural competency is essential.

• Proven leadership and management capabilities are required.

• Familiarity with the Legal Services Act and associated regulations is necessary.

• Strong negotiation and collaboration skills are essential for effective partnerships.

• Understanding of not-for-profit governance and the roles and responsibilities of directors is important.

• Proficiency in the Anishnawbe language is an asset.

• Extensive knowledge of funding mechanisms and reporting obligations is required.

• A clear criminal background check is mandatory.

Compensation: In accordance with the established pay structure for legal positions
