Chair of Research in Northern Social Work

Yukon University

Located across twelve communities within the traditional territories of Yukon First Nations, Yukon University embodies the resilient spirit of the Yukon wilderness and the enduring strength of its people. With eleven of the fourteen First Nations in Yukon being self-governing, these communities are actively influencing the social, economic, and political fabric of the region. For over sixty years, YukonU has been dedicated to providing educational opportunities that reflect the unique challenges and visionary prospects of the North.
YukonU is committed to delivering programs that meet the needs of the North, offering trades training, certificates, diplomas, degrees, adult basic education, and continuing education. Their community campuses are essential in enhancing access to education for Yukoners and facilitating learning experiences for students from across Canada and beyond, focused on the North. YukonU also reaffirms its dedication to supporting Indigenous self-governance and self-determination for current and future generations.

The Opportunity

This Research Chair position is being created to enhance research capabilities in northern social work at YukonU. The individual in this role will assist the university in achieving its academic objectives by expanding its capacity for impactful teaching and research, while also reinforcing its influence on northern issues. This is a pivotal moment for social work at YukonU, as the institution transitions its partnered Bachelor of Social Work degree into a uniquely Yukon-based program. The Research Chair will be instrumental in developing this new social work degree, ensuring that the curriculum is shaped by and aligned with relevant, emerging research, alongside the introduction of innovative research initiatives. The Research Chair will also contribute to designing a degree experience that equips students to effectively practice social work in the North.
The Research Chair will establish a research agenda that informs social work practices in the North, particularly in relation to the evolving context of Yukon First Nation self-governance. Key responsibilities will include increasing research output, developing curriculum based on northern research findings, creating opportunities for student involvement in research, mentoring colleagues, and enhancing the knowledge base that social work practitioners in Yukon depend on for delivering high-quality services.
The program will aim to identify and implement trauma-informed, decolonized methodologies that respect the significant contributions, knowledge, and lived experiences of Yukon First Nations and Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
