Lead Scholar in Northern Social Work

Yukon University

Located across twelve communities within the traditional territories of Yukon First Nations, Yukon University is inspired by the resilient spirit of the Yukon wilderness and the enduring strength of its people. With eleven of the fourteen First Nations in Yukon exercising self-governance, they are actively influencing the social, economic, and political landscape of the region. For over sixty years, YukonU has been dedicated to providing educational experiences that address the unique opportunities and challenges of the North.
YukonU meets the educational needs of the North through a variety of programs including trades training, certificates, diplomas, and degrees, as well as adult basic education and continuing education. Our community campuses are essential in ensuring access to education for Yukoners and in offering opportunities for students from across Canada and beyond to engage with the North. We are also committed to supporting Yukon First Nations in their journey towards self-governance and self-determination for future generations.

The Invitation

Are you eager to contribute to the advancement of Social Work and Social Work Education in the North? Do you have a passion for fostering reconciliation through education, developing community-engaged curricula, transformative learning, and conducting ethical research in northern contexts? Yukon University is in search of a faculty member who is profoundly dedicated to teaching, research, and scholarly pursuits. YukonU values equity, diversity, and inclusion, and we encourage all qualified individuals to apply, with a particular emphasis on those who self-identify as Yukon First Nations, other First Nations, Métis, Inuit, or of Indigenous ancestry.

The Opportunity

Yukon University is embarking on an exciting phase of growth. With a new Strategic Plan, Academic Plan, and Reconciliation Framework, YukonU is committed to expanding postsecondary education options for Yukoners and Northerners. This includes the creation of a unique Social Work degree tailored to the needs of the region. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in this initiative, engaging with Yukon First Nations, community organizations, and both current and former students to inform the development of this new degree, drawing on three decades of collaboration with the University of Regina. The Social Work program will encompass theoretical knowledge, practical experiences, and clinical practices that honor the diverse cultures, historical contexts, and systemic influences relevant to Social Work in the North. Additionally, the program will integrate trauma-informed and reconciliation-focused practices that respect the contributions, traditional knowledge, and lived experiences of Yukon First Nations and Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching, engaging in research and scholarly activities, developing curricula, and collaborating with colleagues across YukonU's academic community.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering undergraduate-level instruction, including student supervision;
  • Participating in degree development, including program mapping, course design, and ensuring ongoing relevance to the needs identified in collaboration with Yukon First Nations;
  • Engaging in research and scholarly activities, including partnerships with Indigenous Peoples and incorporating Indigenous Knowledges, as well as supervising and mentoring students involved in research;
  • Fostering an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all endeavors.
The Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in Social Work;
  • A strong record of scholarly and/or creative work in Social Work, ideally in collaboration with Indigenous, northern, or rural/remote communities;
  • Significant experience in Social Work practice, preferably in a Yukon, northern, or rural/remote context;
  • Previous experience in postsecondary teaching;
  • Demonstrated commitment to institutional service, whether within a university or through community engagement.

Prior experience in any of the following areas will be considered advantageous:

  • Mentoring emerging faculty;
  • Curriculum development and program assessment;
  • Teaching through distance education technologies.

  • A letter of application
  • A curriculum vitae

A professional dossier, which may include narratives about:
