Student Respiratory Therapist - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Role Overview

As a Student Respiratory Therapist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, you will play a crucial role in assessing and monitoring the health of our patients. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Evaluating, documenting, and reporting patient health status through various methods, including:
    - Gathering patient information from medical records and conducting thorough physical assessments;
    - Collaborating with the Respiratory Therapy team and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care;
    - Maintaining accurate documentation of patient care activities.
  • Working alongside the Respiratory Therapy team and other healthcare providers to develop and adjust patient care plans by:
    - Supporting patients in establishing health-promoting relationships;
    - Assisting in setting both short-term and long-term health goals;
    - Identifying necessary care actions that encompass preventative, therapeutic, and rehabilitative measures.
  • Providing Respiratory Therapy care under the supervision of a qualified Respiratory Therapist, which may involve:
    - Assisting with basic oxygen therapy and inhaled medication administration;
    - Supporting airway management and mechanical ventilation tasks;
    - Educating patients and families about care plans and self-care techniques.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Completion of Level 1 clinical placement from an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program and ongoing enrollment in a recognized educational institution.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support or an equivalent qualification.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to organize tasks effectively and prioritize workload.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Physical capability to fulfill the duties associated with the position.
  • Commitment to understanding and supporting the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and related initiatives.
