The Department of Environment and Climate Change is dedicated to the stewardship of land, water, air, wildlife, and forests. This involves advocating for, planning, and facilitating the prudent and sustainable utilization of natural resources while safeguarding, rehabilitating, and managing the environment for the collective benefit of all residents in the Northwest Territories.

Position Overview

Located in Inuvik and reporting directly to the Manager of Wildlife and Environment, the Regional Environmental Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of regional initiatives concerning hazardous materials, waste management, air quality, and environmental evaluations. The Coordinator also undertakes environmental inspections and inquiries, while facilitating regional contributions to environmental assessments, permits, and licensing processes.

This role necessitates close collaboration with the resource harvesting community, industry stakeholders, and local governments to effectively achieve the goals and objectives of the Department of Environment and Climate Change, even amidst differing perspectives on environmental governance. The resource harvesting community encompasses individuals, First Nations organizations, and community-based resource collectives.

The Coordinator partners with Renewable Resource Officers to proficiently implement ECC programs within the region. In collaboration with ECC technical and professional personnel, the Coordinator contributes to a comprehensive review and analysis of land leases, land use permit applications, water license applications, and other authorizations related to resource development.

The responsibilities are executed in alignment with ECC policies and procedures, as well as within the framework of legislation including, but not limited to, the Environmental Protection Act, Pesticide Act, Waste Reduction and Recovery Act, Environmental Rights Act, Wildlife Act, Forest Management Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Species at Risk Act, and Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


• Proven expertise in environmental management practices and standards within a territorial context.

• Proficient understanding of conservation biology, wildlife population dynamics, and habitat assessment methodologies, including field and statistical techniques, with hands-on experience in wildlife biology field operations. Specialized knowledge in environmental management practices and techniques (e.g., spill response, safe handling of hazardous materials and waste, contaminated site management, air quality monitoring, land and water use).

• Familiarity with applicable federal and territorial legislation governing environmental management and assessment in the Northwest Territories.

• In-depth understanding of typical processes involved in resource extraction across mining, oil and gas, and forestry sectors, along with their associated environmental impacts.

• Working knowledge of relevant territorial and federal laws including the Wildlife Act, Forest Management Act, Environmental Protection Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Species at Risk Act, and Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act.

• Exceptional writing and editorial capabilities to articulate concepts and recommendations effectively and to prepare comprehensive reports.

• Strong verbal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to convey ideas clearly;

• Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

• Proficient in planning and coordinating diverse activities in collaboration with other organizations.

• Ability to work autonomously within a cooperative environment.

• Proficient in computer software applications (word processing, spreadsheets, GIS, database management).

• Commitment to actively promoting and consistently practicing personal diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness, alongside safety and sensitivity approaches in the workplace.

Typical Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science degree in a natural science discipline, complemented by three years of relevant experience, including program planning and delivery as well as environmental or socio-economic impact assessments.
