Regional Nutrition Specialist

Department: Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority
The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) provides rewarding and dynamic career opportunities in the delivery and management of health and social services across Canada's Northern regions. With service points in various communities throughout the territory, the Authority employs over 1,600 individuals who cater to the needs of more than 43,000 residents in the NWT and 5,900 individuals in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. Employees of the NTHSSA benefit from engaging work environments, supportive communities, and enhanced career prospects.
Position OverviewThis role is based at the Inuvik Regional Hospital (IRH), which serves the town of Inuvik along with 7 surrounding communities supported by the NTHSSA and the 5 communities in the Sahtu Region. The IRH is an accredited facility with 22 acute care beds and 25 long-term care beds, catering to approximately 10,000 residents in the Sahtu and Beaufort-Delta regions. The NTHSSA is committed to providing comprehensive health care services to both adults and children, whether on an inpatient, outpatient, or outreach basis, with a focus on fostering healthy communities and enhancing well-being through excellence, accountability, and respect for regional diversity.
Reporting to the Territorial Specialist for Chronic Disease, the Community Dietitian, North (Dietitian) assumes a pivotal leadership role in primary care and health promotion initiatives for the NTHSSA. The Dietitian collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and engages with community members to implement nutrition and related programs tailored to identified needs and priorities.
Services may be delivered in various settings, including the Primary Care Clinic, Acute Care, and Long-Term Care environments, utilizing Tele-health/telemerge technologies or via telephone consultations. The aim is to promote wellness, alleviate suffering, and prevent injuries. Services can be rendered through independent practice or as part of an integrated care team. This position demands the ability to manage multiple complex issues simultaneously while maintaining meticulous attention to detail. The incumbent must demonstrate resourcefulness and confidence, often working independently with limited direct supervision. Additionally, the healthcare environment may present challenges such as frequent interruptions and limited control over the workplace.
The role requires the incumbent to travel to communities outside of Inuvik at least once every other month for several days. Furthermore, the incumbent may need to provide coverage for other Dietitians within the NTHSSA, either in person or virtually.
Typically, the qualifications for this position include:
- A Baccalaureate Degree in Nutrition, along with completion of an accredited Dietetic Internship program, and a minimum of one (1) year of recent experience in acute or ambulatory care.
- A Master's degree in Nutrition may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Additional Requirements
- Current eligibility for registration with a provincially regulated association of Registered Dietitians is mandatory.
- Membership with Dietitians of Canada is considered an asset.
For inquiries, please contact the Health Recruitment team within the Department of Finance, Government of the Northwest Territories.
