Regional Sustainability Officer

Position Overview
As a key member of the Government of Northwest Territories, the Environmental Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and executing regional initiatives related to hazardous materials, waste management, air quality, and environmental evaluations. This role involves conducting thorough environmental inspections and investigations while facilitating regional contributions to environmental assessments, permits, and licensing processes.
Collaboration and Community Engagement
The Coordinator will work in close partnership with the resource harvesting community, industry stakeholders, and local governments to achieve the goals and objectives of the Environmental Conservation Committee (ECC), navigating diverse perspectives on environmental stewardship. This community includes individuals, First Nations organizations, and local resource groups.
Program Delivery and Support
In collaboration with Renewable Resource Officers, the Coordinator will ensure effective implementation of ECC programs throughout the region. Working alongside technical and professional staff, the Coordinator will contribute to a comprehensive review and analysis of land leases, land use permits, water licenses, and other authorizations pertaining to resource development.
Compliance and Legislation
The responsibilities of this position will be executed in alignment with ECC policies and procedures, as well as relevant legislation, including but not limited to the Environmental Protection Act, Pesticide Act, Waste Reduction and Recovery Act, Environmental Rights Act, Wildlife Act, Forest Management Act, Environmental Assessment Act, Species at Risk Act, and Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act.
Qualifications and Skills
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:
- In-depth knowledge of environmental management practices and standards within a territorial framework.
- Familiarity with conservation biology, wildlife population dynamics, and habitat assessment methodologies, including both field and statistical techniques.
- Expertise in environmental management practices, including spill response, safe handling of hazardous materials, contaminated site management, and air quality monitoring.
- Understanding of applicable federal and territorial legislation concerning environmental management and assessment.
- Awareness of processes involved in resource extraction across mining, oil and gas, and forestry sectors, along with their environmental implications.
- Strong writing and editorial capabilities to effectively communicate concepts and recommendations.
- Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to articulate ideas clearly.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to coordinate multiple activities in collaboration with various organizations.
- Capacity to work independently while fostering a cooperative environment.
- Proficiency in computer software, including word processing, spreadsheets, GIS, and databases.
- Commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness, as well as prioritizing safety and sensitivity in the workplace.
Education
Typically, the qualifications for this position include a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural science discipline and three years of relevant experience, encompassing program planning, delivery, and environmental or socio-economic impact assessments.
