About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Relief Community Shelter Worker to join our team at Homes First Society. As a Relief Community Shelter Worker, you will play a vital role in providing support and services to individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized support to tenants living in our housing or hostels, addressing challenges such as poverty, mental health, addictions, abuse, and social isolation.
  • Assist tenants in developing basic life management skills, accessing resources for health and well-being, and promoting assertive communication, goal setting, and self-esteem.
  • Work with tenants who have hoarding behaviors, mental health, and addiction issues, using case management as a tool to support residents in meeting their goals.
  • Apply knowledge of group processes and dynamics to facilitate effective support and services.
  • Stay up-to-date on rental legislation in Ontario and ensure compliance.
  • Utilize excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues as part of a team to achieve shared goals.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, to ensure clear and concise communication with tenants and colleagues.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary education in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience working with individuals who are homeless or under-housed.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, standards, and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and written.
  • Knowledge of our tenant population, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices, and systemic reasons for homelessness.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
  • Certificates in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention, and Intervention are an asset.
  • Certificate of Completion of Homelessness Learning Hub's Harm Reduction for the Homelessness Sector is considered an asset.
