Inuvik, Canada Government of Northwest Territories Full time

Department: Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) is dedicated to providing dynamic and fulfilling careers in health and social services management and delivery in the northern regions of Canada. With service locations throughout the territory and a workforce exceeding 1,600, we serve over 43,000 residents of the Northwest Territories and 5,900 individuals in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. Employees of the NTHSSA benefit from engaging work environments, supportive communities, and numerous professional development opportunities.

Position Overview

This role is based at the Inuvik Regional Hospital (IRH), which caters to the town of Inuvik and 7 surrounding communities, as well as the 5 communities in the Sahtu Region. The IRH is a fully accredited facility with 22 acute care beds and 25 long-term care beds, serving approximately 10,000 residents in the Sahtu and Beaufort-Delta regions. The NTHSSA is committed to enhancing community health and well-being through the provision of comprehensive health care services to both adults and children, utilizing inpatient, outpatient, and outreach methods.

As a key member of the health care team, the Community Dietitian, North (Dietitian) reports to the Territorial Specialist for Chronic Disease. This position is pivotal in leading primary care initiatives and health promotion efforts within the NTHSSA. The Dietitian collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and engages with community members to implement nutrition and health-related programs tailored to specific community needs and priorities.

Services may be delivered in various settings, including the Primary Care Clinic, Acute Care, and Long-Term Care environments, through Tele-health/telemerge, or via telephone consultations. The focus is on promoting wellness, alleviating health issues, and preventing injuries. The Dietitian may operate independently or as part of an integrated care team, requiring the ability to manage multiple complex issues while maintaining meticulous attention to detail. The role demands resourcefulness and confidence, as the incumbent often works independently with limited direct supervision. Additionally, the health care environment may present challenges such as frequent interruptions.

The position entails travel to communities outside of Inuvik at least once every other month for several days. The incumbent may also be called upon to provide coverage for other Dietitians within the NTHSSA, either in person or virtually.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A Baccalaureate Degree in Nutrition, along with completion of an accredited Dietetic Internship program, and a minimum of one (1) year of recent experience in acute or ambulatory care.
- A Master's degree in Nutrition may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Requirements
Current eligibility for registration with a provincially regulated association of Registered Dietitians is essential.
Membership with Dietitians of Canada is considered an asset.
