John Wood Group is seeking a Senior Estimator to enhance the Minerals & Metals division. This role is structured as a contract position, with responsibilities allocated on an as-needed basis. Reporting directly to the Director of Project Controls, the incumbent will oversee the estimating efforts for substantial industrial initiatives from the initial design phase through to planning and execution.

Compensation: CDN $142,000 - $174,000 annually

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop comprehensive capital cost estimates ranging from Order of Magnitude to detailed estimates for mining and heavy industrial projects.
  • Plan and oversee the estimating timeline and methodology.
  • Establish and refine estimating methodologies.
  • Define inputs for estimates, coordinating with all parties involved in the capital cost estimation process.
  • Gather quotations from suppliers and subcontractors to support capital cost estimates.
  • Conduct high-level analyses of project quantities and costs to ensure accuracy.
  • Identify and focus on significant cost drivers throughout the estimating process.
  • Proactively address overlaps and gaps in costing.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations of estimates to both internal and client management.
  • Maintain thorough documentation to support the preparation and review of estimates.
  • Estimate contingencies and escalations utilizing in-house models.
  • Engage in discussions regarding contingencies and recommendations.
  • Foster strong working relationships with staff, engineering leads, project managers, and clients.
  • Keep all stakeholders informed of progress and ensure alignment with the estimating plan.
  • Supervise and mentor a small team of estimators.
  • Produce high-quality capital cost estimates that are defensible.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least 10 years of experience in estimating and leading capital cost estimates for mining or heavy industrial projects within an EPC/EPCM environment.
  • Preferred prior experience as a lead estimator on mining projects, along with field experience.
  • Proven experience in estimating costs for international projects.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to present to senior management.
  • Strong organizational skills, a solid work ethic, and effective leadership capabilities.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with a prompt and decisive approach.
  • Comprehensive understanding of construction processes.
  • Familiarity with AACEI estimate classifications and guidelines.
  • An engineering degree or engineering technologist diploma is advantageous.
  • Experience in mining and estimating heavy civil works is a plus.
  • Authorization to work in Canada without sponsorship from John Wood Group is required.
