About the Role

The OPOR initiative represents Nova Scotia's commitment to establishing a unified health record for all residents. The Clinical Leadership Physician will play a pivotal role in advocating for OPOR, focusing on change management that encompasses clinician involvement and standardization of practices to enhance care quality across diverse information systems. This position will ensure provincial representation across various geographical areas, organizations, and clinical specialties.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) and Vice President of Medicine, the Clinical Leadership Physician will:

  • Facilitate OPOR readiness and the physician aspects of clinical practice standardization throughout the health authority to elevate the quality, safety, and efficiency of patient care through clinical systems and evidence-based practices.
  • Engage with healthcare providers across various roles, including physicians, interprofessional teams, and health records professionals, to promote effective utilization of the clinical information system.
  • Assist in the development of clinical protocols, standardization, and metrics for clinical documentation to ensure successful adoption of clinical applications.
  • Act as a practicing physician leader who regularly utilizes clinical information systems in patient care by:
    • Advocating for the integration of information technology in clinical settings to enhance safety, quality, patient satisfaction, and operational efficiency;
    • Identifying needs and facilitating training for clinicians on clinical systems;
    • Demonstrating and instructing clinicians on the effective use of clinical systems to positively impact patient care;
    • Leveraging clinical and health data to enhance services and daily operations;
    • Identifying opportunities for ongoing system improvements and necessary changes to maximize the benefits of clinical automation.
Deliverables
  • Assign One Person One Record Physician Leads by service area.
  • Participate actively in departmental and network meetings as a representative.
  • Engage in Physician Needs Assessments for clinical areas.
  • Collaborate with champions and subject matter experts.
  • Maintain direct communication with physicians regarding inquiries and feedback.
  • Deliver a minimum of one presentation per month to service areas.
  • Contribute to design sessions and meetings relevant to clinical areas.
  • Act as a One Person One Record champion across the province.
  • Engage with Clinical Teams effectively.

Service Areas Include:

Perioperative, Anesthesia, General Medicine, Palliative Care, Primary Care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Critical Care, Emergency Services, Oncology, and Mental Health.

Qualifications
  • Medical Degree is mandatory.
  • Current medical licensure is required.
  • Experience in informatics is preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to listen and respond to the needs and recommendations of healthcare providers.
  • Recognized as credible and visionary with a track record of achieving results.
  • Strong understanding of technical issues with the ability to communicate effectively with peers and users.
  • Commitment to leveraging technology to enhance patient care.
  • Thorough understanding of regulatory and risk management requirements for clinical information systems.
  • Capability to develop adaptable models for care pathways and order set management.
Preferred Experience
  • Deep understanding of clinical workflow and challenges in specialty units.
  • Previous experience in clinical outcomes, patient safety, and quality management.
  • Familiarity with the routine use of clinical information systems in patient care.
  • Successful history of implementing healthcare applications.
  • Experience with innovative practices in healthcare.
  • Training in medical administration, informatics, or public health is preferred.
  • Expertise in data analytics and population health is advantageous.
Time Commitment

Estimated at 4-6 hours per week.

Compensation Structure

Compensation will be based on deliverables.
