Position Summary:

The CPS Technician is accountable for the thorough reprocessing of medical equipment and instruments utilized in surgical and patient care settings. Responsibilities encompass the collection of soiled instruments, decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution.

Key Qualifications:

  • Mandatory College certification in Sterile Supply Processing, including three course modules with a practicum (120 hours) in a hospital sterile processing department.
  • CSA certification is required or must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • Minimum grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is advantageous.
  • At least one year of hospital experience in sterile processing techniques and preparation of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Proven knowledge of surgical instrumentation.
  • Successful completion of the in-house orientation/training program within the probationary period is essential.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral, are required.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role.
  • A positive work and attendance record is crucial.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect contaminated equipment and instruments, returning them to the CPS.
  • Clean and terminally decontaminate surgical instruments and reusable equipment according to established protocols.
  • Manually clean heavily soiled instruments in enzymatic detergent prior to mechanical washing.
  • Operate washer-disinfectors, cart washers, and sonic cleaners for instrument decontamination.
  • Dismantle, clean, inspect, and reassemble equipment and instruments as necessary.
  • Verify the functionality and cleanliness of equipment prior to assembly.
  • Ensure proper wrapping of supplies and trays for sterilization, including the use of sterilization integrators and appropriate labeling.
  • Load, unload, and monitor sterilizer parameters.
  • Conduct and document biological testing on all sterilization equipment.
  • Execute sterilization procedures in accordance with established standards.
  • Understand and apply principles of event-related sterilization.
  • Distribute supplies and trays to operating rooms and other designated clinical areas.
  • Prepare surgical case carts for procedures following established protocols.
  • Replenish crash carts and other emergency supply boxes as needed.
  • Assemble and test portable suction equipment.
  • Customize preparation of special supplies as required.
  • Respond promptly to urgent requests from patient care areas.
  • Inspect and report damaged equipment and supplies to the Supervisor or designated personnel.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance Audits and assist with related documentation.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Perform all tasks in compliance with Trillium Health Partners principles and protocols, as well as relevant legislative requirements.
  • Undertake other related duties as assigned.
