Position Overview: The Engineering Department of the District of West Vancouver is looking for a motivated and diligent individual to fill the role of a temporary full-time Engineering Assistant I. This position is set to commence in January 2024. Under the supervision of the Transportation Engineer, the selected candidate will engage in both technical fieldwork and office tasks associated with various municipal engineering responsibilities. This role presents an excellent opportunity for an engineering student eager to gain practical experience in a municipal setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and document sightline challenges linked to vegetation encroachments.
  • Gather and evaluate data concerning roads, bike lanes, sidewalks, and multi-use pathways.
  • Prepare information to address resident inquiries, requests, and complaints.
  • Assist in site inspections for infrastructure projects.
  • Develop preliminary design concepts for review.
  • Conduct initial assessments of locations with traffic concerns and report findings to the supervisor.
  • Draft construction notifications and street occupancy permits.
  • Perform additional related duties as necessary.

Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an Applied Science program at UBC or a comparable program at another educational institution and must be available for a 4 or 8-month work term. The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • A solid understanding of civil engineering projects and construction practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Excel.
  • Strong customer service abilities along with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia.
  • Access to a personal vehicle for commuting and site visits as required.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD is considered an asset.

Additional Requirements: The selected candidate will be required to provide a Police Information Check and documentation of their qualifications.

Position Status: Union (WVMEA) – Temporary, Full-time

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week (specific hours and days may vary)

Compensation: $26.87 per hour (2022 Rates) plus 12% in lieu of benefits.
