Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Terminal Manager to oversee the operations and management of our Campbell River terminal. As the Terminal Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the efficient and effective movement of freight while maintaining exceptional customer service, meeting operational goals, and maintaining a positive working environment and culture.

Van-Kam Freightways Ltd. is a leading regional carrier in Western Canada specializing in less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation. With 8 terminal locations across British Columbia, we fulfill shipments to communities within 1-3 days throughout BC and Alberta. Our coverage extends beyond Western Canada into the U.S. and Eastern Canada through our partner network.

Responsibilities:

Operations Management:

  1. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the terminal, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures.
  2. Manage terminal activities, including dock operations, load planning, dispatching, and driver scheduling, to optimize productivity and minimize delays.
  3. Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  4. Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless coordination of operations and timely resolution of any issues or challenges.
  5. Review and investigate issues related to trailer banks, terminal depart times, driver logs, employee hours, and overtime.
  6. Participate in weekly meetings with Management.
  7. Oversee equipment, building, and yard maintenance.
  8. Manage employee absenteeism and coach/discipline when necessary.

Customer Service:

  1. Maintain a strong focus on customer satisfaction and ensure that customer needs are met promptly and effectively.
  2. Address customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a professional and timely manner.

Safety and Compliance:

  1. Enforce compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and applicable laws.
  2. Promote a safe working environment.
  3. Work with the Maintenance department to manage outside vendors who maintain and repair Van Kam equipment.
  4. Work with the Safety department to ensure all Safety policies and procedures are adhered to and in place.

Financial Management:

  1. Manage terminal budget and expenses, seeking opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvement.

Investing in Employee Development:

  1. Support or help develop employees by coaching, mentoring, and leading.
  2. Institute a solid onboarding process for new employees to ensure a successful transition into the Van Kam family.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  1. Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performing team.
  2. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced environment.
  3. Exceptional organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks effectively.
  4. Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance requirements in the transportation industry.
  5. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Training and Experience:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  2. 5 years of management experience required. Those with experience managing a union environment will be given preference.
  3. Transportation experience is an asset.
  4. AS400 experience is an asset.
  5. Experience with transportation technology is preferred.
