As the Terminal Operations Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the efficient and effective movement of freight while maintaining exceptional customer service, meeting operational goals, and maintaining a positive working environment and culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the terminal, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Agency Relationship Management: Oversee and manage the Agency relationship with our Port Hardy agent to ensure efficient flow of freight to meet customer requirements north of Campbell River.
- Terminal Activities Management: Manage terminal activities, including dock operations, load planning, dispatching, and driver scheduling, to optimize productivity and minimize delays.
- Performance Monitoring: Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as necessary.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless coordination of operations and timely resolution of any issues or challenges.
- Daily Review: Daily review of trailer banks, terminal depart time, driver's log, employee hours and overtime, trailer close time, trailer depart times, trailer weights/load factors, and investigating and correcting manifesting issues.
- Undelivered Freight Management: Daily review of undelivered freight, unmanifested freight, adjusted pick-up reports.
- Meetings and Reporting: Participate in weekly meetings with Management.
- Additional Responsibilities: Filling in for holiday coverage in different departments when needed, oversee equipment, building and yard maintenance, weights and measures revenue, managing employee absenteeism and coaching/disciplining when needed.
Customer Service
- Maintain Customer Satisfaction: Maintain a strong focus on customer satisfaction and ensure that customer needs are met promptly and effectively.
- Customer Inquiries: Address customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
- Business Growth: Collaborate with the sales team to identify opportunities for business growth and development.
Safety and Compliance
- Safety Regulations: Enforce compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and applicable laws.
- Safety Environment: Promote a safe working environment.
- Maintenance Management: Work with the Maintenance department to manage outside vendors who maintain and repair Van Kam equipment.
- Safety Policies: Work with the Safety department to ensure all Safety policies and procedures are adhered to and in place.
- Employee Safety: Manage employee driving habits and coach/discipline when needed.
Financial Management
- Terminal Budget: Manage terminal budget and expenses, seeking opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
Employee Development
- Employee Support: Support or help develop employees by coaching, mentoring, and leading.
- Onboarding: Institute a solid onboarding process for new employees ensuring they are set up for successful transition into the Van Kam family.
Additional Responsibilities
- Terminal Specific Duties: Other Terminal Specific duties as required.
- Ad-Hoc Projects: Other duties/projects on an as-needed basis.
Required Qualifications
- Leadership Skills: Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performing team.
- Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Safety Knowledge: Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance requirements in the transportation industry.
- Communication Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Flexibility: Ability to work flexible hours and handle occasional travel requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Management Experience: 5 years of management experience required. Those with experience managing a union environment will be given preference.
- Transportation Experience: Transportation experience is an asset.
- AS400 Experience: AS400 experience is an asset.
- Transportation Technology: Experience with transportation technology is preferred.
