The Associate Dean for Medical Education, Cape Breton Campus (CBMC) will report directly to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, overseeing all aspects related to the academic mission of the CBMC, while also liaising with both the President of CBU and the Dean of Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine for strategic non-academic initiatives.

As the primary representative and spokesperson for Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine in Cape Breton, the Associate Dean will receive direction from the governing bodies of the CBMC, including the Steering Committee Co-Chairs and other key leaders. This role is pivotal in advancing the vision, mission, and objectives of the CBMC, ensuring that operational readiness is achieved prior to the commencement of the first cohort of learners.

Once the campus is operational, the Associate Dean will manage the implementation of the undergraduate medical education program at the CBMC, collaborating closely with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) from Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine.

The Associate Dean will work in partnership with Dalhousie staff and leadership responsible for academic programs at both the Cape Breton and Halifax campuses. A key focus will be to enhance the health outcomes of rural Nova Scotians through effective collaborations with various stakeholders, including government departments, health institutions, and educational organizations.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The successful candidate must possess a medical doctorate or an equivalent qualification, along with a minimum of five years of experience in a senior leadership role within a clinical or health education environment. A graduate degree with a focus on medical education or business administration is considered advantageous. The ideal candidate will have a background in family medicine and/or rural medicine, complemented by a strong understanding of medical education and research methodologies.

As a proven collaborative leader, the candidate will have experience in team management and the oversight of financial and human resources. Strong facilitation, presentation, and negotiation skills are essential, as is a demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with diverse stakeholder groups and within the community. A commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility is also crucial.

This position is a five-year, renewable term with a continuing academic appointment within the department. The role is subject to renewal for an additional five-year term, contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluations and a positive review of the initial term.
