Journeyperson or Apprentice Protection & Control (P&C) Technologist

(Hourly Wage: $46.87)


In this position, reporting to the Supervisor of SAM/Hydro Distribution, the selected individual will serve as the primary resource for the installation, upkeep, troubleshooting, and repair of all protective relaying and control components within the ENWIN electrical distribution network. Working closely with the Hydro Operational Technology Department and the Systems Planning Engineer, the P&C Technologist will oversee the installation, diagnostics, and maintenance of all SCADA-controlled devices, as well as all computerized, electronic communication, and mechanical protective apparatuses integrated into the ENWIN system.


The responsibilities also include the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment across five ENWIN-owned 115KV transformer stations. Additionally, the P&C Technologist will conduct pre-commissioning testing and programming of new equipment, perform diagnostic assessments, and execute effective repairs on malfunctioning devices. Collaboration with the Hydro Operational Technology Department and the Systems Planning Engineer will be essential for the design and wiring of control cabinets for new installations.


Key Qualifications:


  • Graduation from a three (3) year Electrical/Electronic Technologist program from an accredited community college.
  • Proficiency in interpreting wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and system layouts.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a demonstrated ability to complete necessary documentation, journals, logbooks, and reports.
  • Commitment to a robust safety culture, evidenced by knowledge of and compliance with all relevant safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Capability to perform in physically demanding conditions, including heavy lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces near high voltage lines in various weather conditions.
  • Proven ability to manage stressful situations effectively.
  • Possession of a valid Class 'D' Ontario Driver's License with a 'Z' endorsement or the ability to obtain both within a specified timeframe.
  • Familiarity with high voltage distribution equipment and protective elements within distribution systems.
  • Working knowledge of instruments, meters, and testing equipment relevant to the role.

The Apprentice P&C Technologist role entails the successful completion of an 8,000-hour apprenticeship program, which includes on-the-job training and completion of selected industry-related courses. Responsibilities will progressively increase with each phase of practical experience and formal education. Advancement within this classification will depend on satisfactory job performance and successful completion of the relevant courses. The incumbent will be assigned to various shifts throughout the apprenticeship and will be expected to operate high voltage equipment with appropriate training.
