Position: Protection & Control (P&C) Technologist

Hourly Wage: $46.87

As a key member of the team, the successful candidate will report directly to the Supervisor of SAM/Hydro Distribution. This role is pivotal in overseeing the installation, upkeep, troubleshooting, and repair of all protective relaying and control systems within the electrical distribution framework. Working closely with the Hydro Operational Technology Department and the Systems Planning Engineer, the P&C Technologist will lead efforts in the installation, diagnostics, and maintenance of all SCADA-controlled devices, as well as computerized and mechanical protective equipment.

The responsibilities include ensuring the operational integrity of all equipment located in the ENWIN-owned 115KV transformer stations. The P&C Technologist will also conduct pre-commissioning testing and programming of new systems, perform diagnostic assessments, and execute effective repairs on malfunctioning devices. Collaboration with the Hydro Operational Technology Department and the Systems Planning Engineer will be essential for the design and wiring of control cabinets for new installations.

Work Schedule: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM

Qualifications Required:

  • Graduation from a three-year Electrical/Electronic Technologist program from an accredited community college.
  • Proficiency in interpreting wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and system maps.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to complete relevant documentation, reports, and logs.
  • Commitment to safety, demonstrated through knowledge of and adherence to safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Capacity to perform in physically demanding environments, including heavy lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces near high voltage lines under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to manage stress effectively.
  • Possession of a valid Class 'D' Ontario Driver's License with a 'Z' endorsement or the capability to obtain both within a specified timeframe.
  • Familiarity with high voltage distribution systems and protective elements, as well as customer-owned equipment.
  • Working knowledge of instruments, meters, and testing equipment relevant to the role.

The Apprentice P&C Technologist position entails the successful completion of an 8,000-hour apprenticeship program, which includes on-the-job training and selected industry-related coursework. Responsibilities will increase progressively with each phase of practical experience and formal education. Advancement within this classification will depend on satisfactory job performance and successful completion of required courses. The incumbent will be assigned to various shifts throughout the apprenticeship and will be expected to operate high voltage equipment with appropriate training.
