Journeyperson or Apprentice Protection & Control (P&C) Technologist

(Hourly Wage: $46.87)


In this position, reporting to the Supervisor of SAM/Hydro Distribution, the selected candidate will serve as the primary resource for the installation, upkeep, troubleshooting, and repair of all protective relaying and control components within the ENWIN electrical distribution network. Collaborating closely with the Hydro Operational Technology Department and the Systems Planning Engineer, the P&C Technologist will oversee the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all SCADA-controlled devices, along with all computerized, electronic communication, and mechanical protective apparatuses integrated into the ENWIN system.


The P&C Technologist will also be accountable for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment located in the five ENWIN-owned 115KV transformer stations. Responsibilities will include conducting pre-commissioning tests and programming of new equipment, performing diagnostic assessments, and executing effective repairs on malfunctioning devices. Additionally, the role entails working with the Hydro Operational Technology Department and the Systems Planning Engineer on the design and wiring of control cabinets for new installations.


Working Hours: 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM


Qualifications Required:


  • Graduation from a three (3) year Electrical/Electronic Technologist program from a recognized community college.
  • Proficiency in interpreting wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and system maps.
  • Capability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to complete relevant documentation, journals, logbooks, and reports.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a robust safety culture through knowledge of and compliance with all pertinent safety regulations, legislation, policies, and operational procedures.
  • Aptitude for working in physically demanding environments, including heavy lifting, stretching, climbing ladders, and operating in confined spaces near high voltage lines in various weather conditions.
  • Proven ability to manage stressful situations effectively.
  • Possession of a valid Class 'D' Ontario Driver's License with a 'Z' endorsement or the ability to obtain both within a specified timeframe after appointment.
  • Familiarity with high voltage distribution equipment and distribution system protective elements.
  • Working knowledge of instruments, meters, and testing equipment relevant to the role.

The Apprentice P&C Technologist position requires the successful completion of an 8,000-hour apprenticeship program, which includes on-the-job training and completion of selected industry-related courses. Responsibilities will increase progressively with each phase of practical experience and formal training. Advancement within the classification will depend on satisfactory job performance and successful completion of the relevant courses. The incumbent will be assigned to various shifts throughout the apprenticeship and will be expected to work on and operate high voltage equipment as training progresses.
