Protection & Control (P&C) Technologist

(Hourly Wage: $46.87)

Reporting to the Supervisor of Hydro Distribution, the selected candidate will serve as the primary resource for the installation, upkeep, troubleshooting, and repair of all protective relaying and control components within the electrical distribution network. In partnership with the Hydro Operational Technology Department and the Systems Planning Engineer, the P&C Technologist will be the key agent responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all SCADA-controlled devices, as well as all computerized, electronic communication, and mechanical protective apparatus installed in the system.

The P&C Technologist will oversee the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all equipment located in the transformer stations. Responsibilities will also include conducting pre-commissioning tests and programming for new equipment, performing diagnostic assessments, and executing effective repairs on malfunctioning devices. Collaboration with the Hydro Operational Technology Department and the Systems Planning Engineer will be essential for the design and wiring of control cabinets for new installations.

The working hours for this role are from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Qualifications Required:

  • Graduation from a three-year Electrical/Electronic Technologist program from an accredited community college.
  • Proficiency in interpreting wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and system layouts.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a demonstrated ability to complete relevant documentation.
  • Commitment to a robust safety culture, evidenced by knowledge of and compliance with all pertinent safety regulations and procedures.
  • Capacity to work in physically demanding conditions, including heavy lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces near high voltage lines.
  • Proven ability to manage stressful situations effectively.
  • Possession of a valid Class 'D' Ontario Driver's License with a 'Z' endorsement or the ability to obtain both within a specified timeframe.
  • Familiarity with high voltage distribution equipment and protective elements.
  • Working knowledge of instruments, meters, and testing equipment relevant to the role.

The Apprentice P&C Technologist position entails the successful completion of an extensive apprenticeship program, which includes on-the-job training and selected industry-related coursework. Responsibilities will increase progressively with each phase of practical experience and formal education. Advancement within the classification will depend on satisfactory job performance and successful completion of the requisite courses. The incumbent will be expected to work various shifts throughout the apprenticeship and will receive training to operate high voltage equipment.
