Unit Overview

The Perioperative Services division at Hamilton Health Sciences is dedicated to delivering comprehensive pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care for patients of all ages. Our facility specializes in critical areas including Cardiac, Vascular, Neurosurgery, as well as Adult Burns and Trauma.

Position Overview

The Registered Practical Nurse plays a vital role in providing peri-operative nursing care, adhering to the defined responsibilities and competencies expected of Registered Practical Nurses within the Operating Room environment at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Work Schedule

Shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, nights, and holidays. For on-call duties, prompt availability at the hospital within 30 minutes is required.

Qualifications

1. Valid Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse.
2. Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician program.
3. Current certifications in Medication Administration, Enteral Nutrition via Gastrostomy Tube, Urinary Bladder Catheterization, Transcription of Physicians Orders, Advanced Wound Care, and Airway Management, or equivalent community college coursework.
4. Up-to-date Heart and Stroke Foundation CPR certification or equivalent.
5. Recent (within the last 2 years) relevant experience in a tertiary care Operating Room setting.
6. Proven skills and competencies in cardiac, trauma, and vascular surgical procedures.
7. Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork abilities.
8. Commitment to the principles of professional nursing practice.
9. Ability to exercise sound judgment in executing responsibilities and is accountable for interpreting data.
10. Demonstrated critical thinking and decision-making skills in assessment and problem-solving.
11. Ongoing commitment to personal professional development and education.
12. Capability to wear lead aprons for extended periods (aprons weighing 15-20 pounds, for cases lasting 1-3 hours).

As a condition of employment, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination must be submitted to Employee Health Services.
