Job Summary:

As a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) at McMaster University, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and health education to individuals seeking healthcare assistance. Under the direction of healthcare practitioners or registered nurses, you will work within the scope of practice of the RPN as determined by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments, develop care plans, and provide interventions for patients, including health education and crisis intervention.
  • Independently provide care to students using medical directives and perform patient assessments to determine an appropriate action plan of care.
  • Triage patients entering the centre to appropriate physicians and monitor patient vital signs.
  • Provide general health and wellness education to patients, explain medical terminology and conditions, and offer first-line supportive counselling to students experiencing a crisis.
  • Communicate and collaborate with external health agencies regarding communicable diseases and information.
  • Organize daily work of clinic teams, perform daily monitoring for vaccine fridge temperatures and expiry dates, and order vaccines and medications from public health.
  • Schedule lab and diagnostic procedures, follow-up appointments, and ensure adequate supplies are available in exam rooms.
  • Prepare patient charts, complete minor dressing changes, and perform ear syringing and ear examinations.
  • Administer injections, refer to medical literature for adverse drug reactions and interactions, and utilize medical diagnostic devices.
  • Document nursing notes in the electronic health records system and complete and submit various forms to external health agencies.
  • Calculate dosages for medication administration and ensure that appropriate medical information and literature is provided to patients.
  • Receive and resolve patient complaints and escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate area.
Requirements:
  • 2-year Community College diploma in Registered Practical Nursing.
  • Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a certified Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and hold a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Requires 3 years of providing care to a diverse patient population for a wide range of medical and mental health issues.
