About the Position

The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) is seeking a highly skilled Research and Policy Analyst to join our team. As a subject matter expert, you will conduct research and respond to research requests, providing research-based policy analysis relevant to CCSA's priorities.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Collaborate with researchers to determine the nature and scope of studies required
  • Contribute to the strategic development of CCSA's research program in the domain of criminal justice and public safety
  • Lead or assist in developing and implementing knowledge mobilization plans on assigned projects and initiatives
  • Implement processes to help CCSA identify and promote important emerging areas of research
  • Contribute to research grant proposals to gain additional research funding for CCSA
  • Represent CCSA on expert committees and working groups and liaise with external scientific and clinical advisors
  • Participate in continuous learning and peer-to-peer learning opportunities with colleagues, partners and networks to advance knowledge and competency of effective knowledge mobilization practices
  • Lead collaboration efforts with a variety of partners to negotiate creative, practical and relevant approaches to knowledge mobilization for sustainable solutions and change
  • Provide functional advice to other RPAs in conducting specific studies
  • Determine the appropriate research methods, analytical techniques, designs, models, scope, timelines and costs of research projects
  • Determine data or information requirements and negotiate agreements with other organizations or government bodies to obtain data
  • Gather information and perform appropriate quantitative analyses, qualitative analyses, or both
  • Conduct or identify existing research knowledge syntheses to inform policy and practice
  • Prepare reports with conclusions, implications and recommendations or proposals for further study
  • Prepare ethics applications and reviews research proposals from other research and policy analysts and kindred agencies
  • Respond to requests for information and advice from other research analysts
  • Conduct media interviews, webinars and workshops, and obtains and provides expert opinions on relevant issues
  • Publish in peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed journals
  • Presents finding of research at conferences, workshops and symposia
  • Conduct impact analyses of new research directions on existing policies and practices in the substance use and addiction fields
Qualifications
  • Masters or PhD in the health sciences, social sciences, neuroscience, population health or epidemiology
  • Three to five years of experience conducting research in related field
  • Experience facilitating multi-partner groups (e.g., health professionals, the public, healthcare managers and other decision makers, private industry)
  • Understanding of aspects of knowledge mobilization (e.g., generation, synthesis, product development, knowledge translation and exchange, dissemination, management, evaluation)
  • Familiarity with partner engagement, consultation and related data collection through a variety of mechanisms, including surveys, focus groups and social media
  • Ability to inform the development of knowledge mobilization products, such as toolkits, learning modules, lay and research publications, and policy briefs, using feedback from knowledge users
  • Experience working with quantitative statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R) or qualitative analysis software (e.g., MAXQDA)
  • Fully developed analytical and reasoning skills
  • Ability to understand, express and apply complex quantitative analyses, qualitative analyses, or both; concepts; methods; and procedures
  • Ability to perform knowledge syntheses and critically appraise and evaluate research
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences
  • Experience analyzing public policy and determining the implications of new research knowledge for application by policy makers
  • Experience effectively liaising with local, national or international collaborators from various sectors
  • Strong time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Eligible for a Government of Canada security clearance
  • Self-motivated and demonstrates attention to detail and desire for accuracy and self-improvement
Assets
  • Experience in preparing successful grant proposals and reviewing grant proposals, particularly with federal research granting bodies (e.g., Canadian Institutes of Health Research; Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council; federal departments and agencies such as Health Canada, Department of Justice Canada and Public Safety Canada)
  • Experience working in or with governmental, non-governmental or international organizations
  • Bilingual in English and French
  • Research experience in the fields of alcohol and cannabis
