Job Title: Senior Policy Analyst

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Policy Analyst to join our team at the Assembly of First Nations. As a key member of our Social Development team, you will be responsible for conducting research and analysis on policies, legislation, and programs related to First Nations Child and Family Services and child wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on policies, legislation, and programs related to First Nations Child and Family Services and child wellbeing.
  • Evaluate existing policies, identify gaps, and propose innovative solutions to address emerging challenges and issues related to First Nations Child and Family Services and child wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with key partners, including First Nations Leadership, government officials, and community-based organizations, to gather insights and perspectives on policy priorities related to Children and Family Services and Child wellbeing.
  • Develop evidence-based policy recommendations and reports for branch and sector leadership.
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of policies and programs and provide strategic advice on areas of improvement.
  • Stay informed about current trends, best practices, and research findings related to First Nation Child Wellbeing and incorporate them into policy development.
  • Participate in policy advocacy efforts and represent the AFN in external meetings, conferences, and forums.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior policy analysts, fostering a culture of learning and professional growth.
Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree in social sciences, political science or law or a related field of study with a minimum of 5 years of relevant senior experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to child wellbeing and family matters in First Nations and/or Social Development.
  • Knowledge and understanding of government policies, legislative frameworks, and social services related to First Nations Child and Family Services, Child wellbeing and related social development programs, as well as the intersectionality of poverty, disability, race, gender, remoteness, and other socioeconomic factors in a First Nations context.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to translate complex ideas and information to any audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct, analyze and interpret research and statistical data, and communicating it concisely, ensuring colleagues across the organization, Committees, First Nations leadership and other key stakeholders understand findings and recognize significance.
  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations, federal, provincial, territorial, northern, urban and international governments and officials.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, teamwork and judgment.
  • Demonstrated time management, planning & organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in working collaboratively with diverse partners with the ability to form strong partnerships.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a track record of developing innovative policy solutions.
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to mentor and inspire junior team members.
  • English is the working language although the ability to communicate effectively in French or any Indigenous language would also be an asset.
