About the Office: The Office of the Chief Counsel to the Mayor serves as the legal backbone for City Hall, providing essential legal support to the Mayor's Office. Collaborating closely with the Law Department and General Counsel of various City agencies, this office plays a pivotal role in offering legal insights that align with the administration's policy objectives.

Position Overview: We are in search of a proactive and service-oriented attorney to partner with senior officials in the Mayor's Office. The Associate Counsel will report directly to the Chief of Staff to the Chief Counsel. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Conducting thorough research on local, state, and federal legislation, judicial rulings, and legal precedents;
  2. Delivering policy advice and legal evaluations to City Hall personnel to support mayoral projects;
  3. Collaborating with senior administration members on transparency initiatives, ensuring adherence to the Freedom of Information Law;
  4. Assessing ethical dilemmas, privacy issues, and conflicts for the Mayor's Office, including inquiries related to external engagements and gift approvals;
  5. Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, agreements, and licenses on behalf of the Mayor's Office;
  6. Providing legal counsel on employment, EEO, and conflict-related matters to Mayor's Office staff;
  7. Serving as a policy advisor to agencies under the Chief Counsel's jurisdiction;
  8. Evaluating and making legal determinations regarding sensitive documents.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years of pertinent legal experience, which may include government, prosecutorial, or law firm backgrounds;
  • Exceptional analytical skills and sound judgment;
  • Ability to effectively manage a diverse workload while prioritizing multiple tasks in a dynamic environment;
  • Strong, clear communication abilities;
  • A commitment to public service;
  • Proven capability to collaborate within a fast-paced team setting;
  • Dedication to client service and a responsive approach;
  • Admission to the New York State Bar.
