ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
The Assigned Counsel Plan (ACP) has been delivering exceptional legal representation to individuals in need since its inception in 1966, in accordance with Article 18-B of the County Law. This initiative collaborates closely with the Presiding Justices of the 1st and 2nd Appellate Divisions to ensure that quality legal services are accessible to indigent clients.
Funding for the ACP is provided by the New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services and the City of New York through the Office of Criminal Justice. The ACP compensates private attorneys who represent clients facing criminal charges when institutional providers are unable to do so due to conflicts of interest.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Senior Legal Advisor will oversee a team of 18-B attorneys, advocating for clients involved in misdemeanor and felony cases within the Criminal and Supreme Courts of New York City. This role operates under the guidance of the ACP Administrators, allowing for considerable independent judgment.
The Senior Legal Advisor will be responsible for:
- Providing legal support, case consultation, and expert referral assistance to panel attorneys managing cases with mental health considerations.
- Collaborating with fellow ACP Supervising Attorneys to monitor case progress and ensure compliance with best practices.
- Fostering cooperative relationships with key personnel in state and city agencies, as well as community stakeholders.
- Coordinating training sessions with ACP Supervising Attorneys to deliver Continuing Legal Education (CLE) on relevant legal issues.
- Equipping attorneys with essential case law and trial strategies.
- Guiding attorneys through the complexities of CPL 730 and Mental Hygiene Laws.
- Addressing concerns raised by clients, community members, and staff.
- Representing the ACP in citywide and statewide meetings, task forces, and initiatives focused on mental health.
Applicants should possess a minimum of four years of recent, full-time, relevant legal experience following admission to any bar, with at least eighteen months in a supervisory role, managing other attorneys or engaging in complex legal work.
