Position Overview
The Mental Health Program Coordinator plays a pivotal role in shaping mental health and harm reduction initiatives at Mount Allison University. This individual is responsible for steering the design, execution, and sustainability of programs and outreach efforts aimed at enhancing student wellness literacy, education, and awareness across the campus community. Recognizing that wellness education is a collective responsibility, the Coordinator collaborates with a diverse range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and external partners, to promote campus-wide engagement and cooperation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement sustainable educational outreach initiatives that address critical areas of student need, in partnership with other Student Affairs personnel, informed by relevant research and analysis.
- Participate in committees or groups focused on supporting student wellbeing and safer substance use, as determined by supervisory guidance. This may involve collaboration with teams dedicated to mental health strategy updates.
- Work alongside key staff to coordinate programming, strategic awareness campaigns, and training designed to foster mental wellbeing and promote safer substance use practices among students.
- Review and provide recommendations regarding alcohol and substance use policies on campus in collaboration with relevant committees.
- Gather and analyze feedback and data to evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing projects and assess program impact.
- Identify and engage strategic external partners to enhance student wellness service delivery, awareness, and promotion in collaboration with university stakeholders.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to maintain and propose updates to institutional mental health and wellness strategies and procedures.
- Oversee the development and training of peer supporters and mental health champions who will advocate for positive mental health practices and self-care.
- Create and manage resources for group sessions and workshops covering a broad spectrum of wellness and personal management topics to assist students in navigating their university experience successfully.
- Serve as a resource on mental health, wellness, and harm reduction initiatives for student groups, faculty, and staff within the university.
- Prepare and submit reports to the Director on project activities and outcomes as required throughout the year.
- A minimum of a university degree in a relevant field (e.g., Psychology, Social Work, Health Promotion, Addictions, Harm Reduction).
- At least 3 years of experience or an advanced diploma in Mental Health, Health Promotion, Addictions, Harm Reduction, or equivalent qualifications is preferred.
- Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary theories and practices related to mental health and harm reduction.
- Experience in coordinating outreach and educational programs; hands-on teaching experience is advantageous.
- Strong program/project management and coordination capabilities, including the ability to monitor and evaluate program success.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated initiative and creativity; self-motivated individuals are preferred.
- Understanding of the needs of post-secondary students.
- Ability to handle sensitive issues with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Familiarity with programs and services within an educational institution is an asset.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, along with strong online research skills.
