POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Recreation or Aquatic Supervisor at various Recreation Centres, this role entails guiding and instructing participants in specialized fitness programs and activities, both on land and in water. The certified instructor will facilitate fitness classes in accordance with their certification standards, ensuring a safe, informative, and effective fitness experience for all participants.

This position is primarily designed to deliver specialized fitness and wellness programs such as 55+ Fitness, Yoga, Pilates, Aqua Spinning, and Aqua Warm Water Exercises.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Maintain up-to-date qualifications and certifications in line with current industry standards.

- Instruct groups and individuals in fitness activities adhering to accepted standards within the recreation field.

- Deliver skill instruction for various programs based on personal capabilities and experience.

- Develop course outlines and lesson plans that align with curriculum guidelines.

- Provide insights related to lifestyle awareness within the scope of knowledge pertinent to the recreation instructional program.

- Address clients' specific needs associated with the recreation program being taught.

- Supervise fitness equipment, facilities, and activities to ensure safety, offering emergency or first aid assistance as necessary, including the preparation of incident reports.

- Attend mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.

- Maintain accurate administrative records such as attendance sheets and class rosters as directed by full-time staff.

- Respond to inquiries from the public and program participants.

- Monitor participant performance levels during program activities.

- Manage the setup and breakdown of all program equipment.

- Work independently without direct supervision.

- In the absence of Recreation staff, handle minor emergencies within the facility to ensure the safety of all patrons and staff.

- Adhere to applicable Health and Safety legislation and all corporate and departmental policies related to Occupational Health and Safety.

- Perform additional duties as assigned that relate directly to the responsibilities of this position.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Must possess current certifications and provide documentation at the time of the interview.

2. Qualifications include:

- Current Fitness Certification (Personal Training, Group Fitness Instructor, CALA)
AND
Additional Specialized Certifications (Aqua Spin, etc.)
OR
Current Fitness Certification (Senior Fitness Instructor Certification, Yoga RYT200, Pilates Instructor Certification)

3. Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practices related to teaching skills, techniques, and equipment used in fitness programs, adhering to best practices and standards set by governing bodies.

4. Minimum of two (2) years of instructional or program delivery experience in a related field.

5. Must hold current Standard First Aid with CPR C Certification.

6. HIGH FIVE Training is an asset.

7. Must demonstrate initiative and sound judgment, with the ability to work independently.

8. Must be capable of working with diverse age groups.

9. Must be physically able to demonstrate program techniques to the public in the specified program area.

10. Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, at various locations.

NOTE:

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a Criminal Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening) at their own expense prior to commencing work in this role.

The incumbent must comply with all health and safety policies and practices relevant to this position and the workplace.
