Mechanical Design Lead

Your Contribution

As an integral part of the Mechanical Design division, the Mechanical Design Lead will collaborate closely with various departments, including Applications and Project Management, to ensure that project requirements are fulfilled efficiently and within the designated timeline and budget.

Responsibilities Include

  • Overseeing the mechanical design process of projects from inception to completion, demonstrating a high level of technical, professional, engineering, and consulting acumen.
  • Providing technical guidance, mentorship, and oversight to assigned members of the mechanical design team.
  • Evaluating customer specifications and processes to create a thorough conceptual design for the proposed system, which may involve supporting design calculations, schematics, recommendations for third-party equipment, and the latest technology/processes.
  • Encouraging innovation and resourcefulness in all interactions with both external and internal clients to address any challenges or concerns that may arise during the project lifecycle.
  • Assisting in the formulation of project plans, budgets, resource allocations, and coordinating the design team's efforts.
  • Collaborating closely with Project Management to provide support, status updates, and ensure a smooth transition during the assembly and integration phases of the project.
  • Identifying deficiencies in quotes, risks, scope changes, and submitting recommendations to the Director of Engineering.
  • Coordinating with the Project Management team to ensure timely updates to the project schedule.
  • Working in partnership with internal stakeholders (e.g., Sales, Applications, Project Management, Shop Floor Assembly, Purchasing) as well as external contacts, including clients, consultants, and third-party vendors.
  • Fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment with the project team to conduct design reviews, I/O and functional assessments, safety risk evaluations, certification support, and necessary design modifications.
  • Assessing various mechanical products under consideration for procurement to evaluate their efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Producing precise CAD layouts, manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials.
  • Reviewing, assessing, and enhancing engineering designs prepared by the design team.
  • Ensuring that designs are safe, efficient, effective, and manufacturable prior to release for production.
  • Reviewing the team's drawings for accuracy, material selection, machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc., and approving them for manufacturing release.
  • Reviewing assembly bills of materials prepared by the design team and approving them for the procurement of third-party items.
  • Supporting the shop floor assembly team during the integration phase to resolve any issues and assist in the completion of the system.
  • Creating and maintaining comprehensive project documentation.
  • Developing strong relationships with clients to explore additional work opportunities and identify new potential projects.
  • Ensuring ongoing compliance with local, national, and international standards and regulations (e.g., OSHA, CE, or customer-specific requirements).

Autonomy and Authority Level

  • Operates independently without detailed supervision, adhering to clear guidelines, defined standards, and specifications. Complex or unusual matters are escalated to senior authority.
  • Guides and monitors the work of other staff on a project basis.
  • Provides input and recommendations to management for areas of improvement.
  • Occasionally supports other projects, including the installation of automated equipment at client sites, customer service, and training.

Essential Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in industrial automation.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Solidworks.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
