Mechanical Design Lead
Your Contribution
As an essential member of the Mechanical Design division, the Mechanical Design Lead will collaborate closely with various supporting departments, including Applications and Project Management, to ensure that project requirements are fulfilled and executed within the designated timeline and budget.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the mechanical design process of projects from inception to completion, applying a high level of technical, professional, engineering, and consulting expertise.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and oversight to assigned mechanical design team members.
- Analyze customer specifications and processes to create a thorough conceptual design for the proposed system, which may involve supporting design calculations, schematics, recommendations for third-party equipment, and the latest technology/processes.
- Encourage innovation and resourcefulness in all interactions with both external and internal clients to address any challenges or concerns that may arise during the project lifecycle.
- Assist in formulating project plans, budgets, resource needs, and coordinating the efforts of the design team.
- Collaborate closely with Project Management to provide support, status updates, and ensure a smooth transition during the assembly and integration phases of the project.
- Identify deficiencies in quotes, risks, scope changes, and submit recommendations to the Director of Engineering.
- Work with the Project Management team to ensure timely updates to the project schedule.
- Engage with internal stakeholders (e.g., Sales, Applications, Project Management, Shop Floor Assembly, Purchasing) as well as external contacts, including clients, consultants, and third-party vendors.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment with the project team to conduct design reviews, I/O and functional reviews, safety risk assessments, certification support, and necessary design evaluations and modifications.
- Assess various mechanical products under consideration for purchase to evaluate their efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Generate precise CAD layouts, manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials.
- Review, assess, and enhance engineering designs prepared by the design team.
- Ensure that designs are safe, efficient, effective, and manufacturable prior to the release for manufacturing.
- Examine the team's drawings for accuracy, material selection, machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc., and approve them for manufacturing release.
- Review assembly bills of materials prepared by the design team and approve them for the procurement of third-party items.
- Support the shop floor assembly team during the integration phase to resolve any issues and assist in completing the system.
- Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
- Build strong client relationships with the aim of sourcing additional work and exploring new potential opportunities.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with local, national, and international standards and regulations.
Skills and Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and motivate team members.
- Ability to work well cross-functionally and in a team environment, fostering strong relationships.
- Understanding of project technical specifications, drawings, material differences, and scope of supply.
- Strong time management skills to handle multiple opportunities and meet strict client-imposed deadlines.
Autonomy and Authority
- Operates independently without detailed supervision, adhering to clear guidelines, defined standards, and specifications. Complex or unusual matters are referred to higher authority.
- Guides and monitors the work of other staff on a project basis.
- Provides input and recommendations to management regarding areas for improvement.
- May support other projects occasionally, including the installation of automated equipment on client sites, customer service, and training.
Essential Requirements
- Post-secondary education in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in industrial automation.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Solidworks.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
