Main Purpose and Function
The Transfer & Landfill Operations Branch (TLO) oversees the effective management of the Vancouver South Transfer Station and the Vancouver Landfill. The Superintendent I plays a pivotal role in leading a team of approximately 45 staff members, ensuring operational excellence and high-quality customer service across varying shifts.

Key Responsibilities
The Superintendent I will:

  • Monitor and analyze operational metrics to enhance efficiency and report findings to senior management.
  • Collaborate with management to align annual work plans with the strategic objectives of the City.
  • Drive initiatives for continuous improvement and document best practices within the branch.
  • Manage budgetary responsibilities, including forecasting and addressing discrepancies.
  • Ensure exceptional service delivery to citizens and external clients.
  • Oversee the safe operation of heavy equipment through training and maintenance programs.

Safety and Compliance
In this role, you will:

  • Work closely with safety personnel to ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
  • Promote a culture of safety within the team and conduct regular safety training.
  • Respond to emergencies and lead safety investigations as necessary.
  • Participate in health and safety committees to advocate for workplace safety.

Team Leadership
The Superintendent I will also:

  • Communicate branch goals and expectations clearly to all staff.
  • Mentor and coach team members, fostering a respectful workplace environment.
  • Identify training needs and assist in developing comprehensive training plans.
  • Manage performance development processes and address employee relations issues effectively.

Professionalism and Collaboration
To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Exemplify professional behavior and ensure compliance with regulatory obligations.
  • Lead projects using standard project management principles.
  • Collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders to achieve operational goals.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of high school with relevant courses and experience.
  • Technical, business, and administrative training related to municipal operations is preferred.
  • Experience in a unionized environment and knowledge of solid waste operations is advantageous.
  • A valid BC driver's license is required.
