The Faculty of Arts & Science is seeking applications for anticipated course offerings:
Course: SCTM-2008 - Introduction to Material Science (0.5 credit)
COURSE OVERVIEW: This course offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the structure, properties, and applications of both traditional and contemporary materials utilized in art and design. Topics include pigments, dyes, metals, ceramics, glass, polymers, and biological materials, alongside emerging materials. The course contextualizes materials within the historical framework of technological advancements that have influenced material development. It will also cover the physical science characteristics such as mechanical, chemical, and biological properties, and their impact on material performance. The examination of the physical, optical, and chemical properties, along with environmental sustainability considerations, will guide material selection in design and artistic practices.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities associated with teaching may encompass, but are not limited to: course outline formulation, studio preparation and delivery, inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term assessments, and final evaluations; ensuring compliance with health & safety standards and academic requirements.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A terminal degree in art, design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level is preferred; relevant experience will also be considered. Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities. Proven leadership skills and a commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive educational environment for students, staff, and faculty.EMPLOYMENT TERMS: Sessional appointments are fixed-term contracts. Compensation is based on a per-course pay scale, with a salary of $6 per 0.5 credit course, plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, in accordance with the Employment Standards Act. These positions are contingent upon budget approval and satisfactory enrollment levels.
